Working Holiday Program
The Working Holiday Program is one of the most popular streams under International Experience Canada (IEC), offering young adults the opportunity to travel and work across Canada for up to two years, depending on their country of citizenship. This open work permit program promotes cultural exchange while helping participants gain international work experience in a flexible and rewarding environment.
Designed for citizens of partner countries that have youth mobility agreements with Canada, the Working Holiday Program provides an open work permit that is not tied to a specific employer or location. This means participants can explore various industries, switch jobs, or relocate within Canada as they see fit—making it ideal for those seeking both adventure and work opportunities.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be between 18 and 35 years old (age limits vary by country).
- Hold a valid passport from a participating country.
- Have sufficient funds to support themselves upon arrival (typically at least CAD $2,500).
- Purchase health insurance for the duration of their stay.
- Not be accompanied by dependents.
Applicants must first create an IEC profile and join the relevant pool. If selected, they’ll receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and must then submit a complete application, including biometrics, payment of fees, and supporting documents. Once approved, participants receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction, which they must present to Canadian border officials upon arrival to activate their work permit.
This program provides an excellent opportunity for young people to explore Canada’s cities, landscapes, and cultural diversity, while earning income through seasonal or short-term jobs. Many participants work in hospitality, tourism, retail, or administration—though there’s no restriction on sector or employer.
For those who enjoy their Canadian experience and gain valuable work history, the Working Holiday Program can also be a launching pad for future immigration plans, including transitioning to permanent residence through Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
Whether your goal is to fund your travels or gain career experience abroad, the Working Holiday Program is a unique chance to live like a local in one of the world’s most welcoming countries.
