Singapore to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants from Singapore do not have additional Singapore-specific IRCC forms or special country-specific document requirements for spousal sponsorship. Applications should therefore follow the standard IRCC spousal sponsorship instructions and document checklist, with careful attention to complete identity and civil-status documents, required translations and clear evidence supporting the relationship.
Canada’s spousal sponsorship program allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner for permanent residence. IRCC assesses the sponsor’s eligibility, the genuineness of the relationship and the sponsored applicant’s admissibility before making a final decision.
IRCC permanent residence statistics show that 185 Singaporean citizens were admitted to Canada as sponsored spouses or partners from 2023 through May 2026. This included 70 admissions in 2023, 50 in 2024, 50 in 2025 and 15 from January to May 2026.
Singapore to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Singapore must follow the Singapore office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Singapore Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5850, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Singapore applicants, IMM 5850 focuses on passport, civil and legal status documents, academic records, a one-page study plan, police certificates, financial and source-of-funds evidence, supporter or business documents, funding letters, and IELTS Academic results where provided.
Required Forms
Singapore study permit applicants must follow the Singapore Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.
Country-specific checklist:
Applicants must provide original police certificates for each country or territory where they have lived for six consecutive months or longer since reaching the age of 18.
Applicants who require a Certificate of No Criminal Conviction from local authorities in Singapore will receive further instructions.
Passport Documents
Singapore study permit applicants must provide passport documents as listed by the Singapore office.
Required passport documents include:
- original valid passport or travel document
- copies of all cancelled or expired passports or travel documents, if applicable
The passport or travel document should:
- be valid for the duration of the studies
- contain at least two blank pages, excluding the observation page
- be valid for at least six months
Applicants must also provide a copy of their birth certificate and marriage certificate, if applicable.
Applicants who do not live in their country of citizenship must provide proof of immigration status, such as:
- permanent residence documents
- temporary stay permit
- work permit
- study permit
The document copy must include the issue date and expiry date.
Student Records
Applicants from Singapore must provide academic documents and a study plan as listed in the Singapore office checklist.
Required student records include:
- notarized copies of any university or college diploma granted
- transcripts for any university or college program
If the applicant has not yet graduated, they must indicate the expected graduation date and whether they will receive a degree, diploma, or certificate.
Applicants must also provide a one-page study plan.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada in the accepted program
- the applicant’s overall educational goal
- why the applicant is not pursuing a similar program in the country of residence or citizenship
- how the program will improve employment opportunities in the country of residence or citizenship
- what ties the applicant has to the country of residence or citizenship
If the applicant has been out of full-time education for more than two years, they must provide a curriculum vitae or resumé.
IELTS Academic test results taken within the last year are highly recommended as proof of language proficiency and meeting the school’s language requirements.
Financial Documents
Singapore study permit applicants must provide evidence of accumulated funds showing at least four months of history.
Required financial documents include:
- a copy of a bank book or bank statement showing financial history and account balance for at least the past four months
- a written explanation of the source of funds
- documents supporting the source of funds, where available
Additional asset documents may include:
- stock market or investment accounts
- bonds
- real estate or property documents
- rental income documents
- proof of pension
- business transaction records
These asset documents may support the application, but they should not replace the required bank history and source-of-funds documents.
If clear documentary evidence is not available, the applicant may provide a written explanation.
If the applicant receives funding from a school in Canada or another organization, they must provide an original letter confirming the details of the funding they will receive during each year of the proposed course of study.
Employment Records
Applicants from Singapore must provide income or employment evidence for their parents.
Required parent documents include either:
- original employment letters from each parent’s current employer
- income tax documents for the past two years in the parents’ names
Parent employment letters must include:
- employer name and address
- employer telephone number and email
- parent’s date of hire
parent’s position - current salary
- bonuses and additional income, if applicable
If either parent owns all or part of a business, the applicant must provide:
- a notarized copy of the business registration or licence showing their share in the business
- business tax assessments for the past two years
- audited financial statements and capital verification reports for the most recent fiscal year
If someone other than the applicant’s parents is providing financial support, the applicant must provide the same financial information for that person.
The applicant must also include:
- a written explanation of why someone other than a parent is providing financial support
- proof of relationship, where applicable
If the applicant is employed, they must provide:
- original employment letters showing the employer’s name, address, telephone number, email, date of hire, position, current salary, bonuses, and additional income
- a notice of assessment or income tax documents for the past two years
