Work Permit Extension

Extending your work permit in Canada is a critical process for foreign nationals who wish to continue working legally beyond the expiry of their current authorization. As part of the broader Work section, the Work Permit Extension pathway helps individuals maintain uninterrupted employment and legal status while contributing to the Canadian economy.

Foreign workers must apply to extend their permit before it expires, ideally at least 30 days prior to the end date printed on their current document. Once an application is submitted, applicants are allowed to stay in Canada under “maintained status” (previously known as implied status) until a decision is made—provided they remain in Canada and comply with the conditions of their original permit.

Eligibility requirements for a work permit extension vary depending on the type of permit held. Those with closed work permits (employer-specific) may need a new Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or a new job offer supported by an employer under the Employer Portal. Workers on open work permits, such as those under the Post-Graduate Work Permit, Spouse Open Work Permit, or Bridging Open Work Permit, must provide proof of continued eligibility for their category.

Applicants will need to:

  • Complete and submit the application through IRCC’s online portal.

  • Pay the appropriate fees.

  • Include updated documents, such as passport scans, recent pay stubs, or new employment contracts.

Processing times may vary based on the permit type and current IRCC workload. During this time, it’s essential to remain compliant with all immigration conditions, including work restrictions and address updates.

A successful extension helps foreign nationals avoid gaps in employment and status, which could affect future immigration applications. It’s especially important for those who intend to transition to permanent residence via programs such as Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program.

As extensions can be complex and time-sensitive, we recommend early planning. Missing deadlines or submitting incomplete information can result in serious consequences, including removal from Canada or ineligibility for future permits.

At RightWay Canada, our experienced consultants are ready to guide you through the extension process from start to finish. Book a consultation to assess your eligibility, understand documentation requirements, and ensure your application is submitted accurately and on time.
