How Long Is A Canada Super Visa Valid?
Last updated:
The Super Visa for parents and grandparents can be issued as a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 10 years, although the actual validity may be shorter depending on factors such as the applicant’s passport expiry date and the immigration officer’s decision. Its validity period is separate from how long a parent or grandparent may stay in Canada on each visit. Under current IRCC rules, eligible Super Visa holders can generally stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time, though the exact stay period can still depend on when the application was submitted and, for some older cases, when the person entered Canada. It is also important to understand that once the Super Visa expires, it can no longer be used for future travel, even if a person already in Canada may remain until the end of their authorized stay, provided their visitor status is still valid.
How Long a Super Visa Is Valid
A Canada Super Visa is a multiple-entry visa that can be issued for a period of up to 10 years. This means the visa holder may use it to travel to Canada more than once during its validity period, provided the visa has not expired.
For many families, this longer validity is one of the main advantages of the Super Visa. Unlike a standard visitor visa used for shorter visits, the Super Visa is designed to support repeated travel over a longer period of time.
Maximum validity and actual validity are not always the same
Although the Super Visa can be valid for up to 10 years, that does not mean every applicant will receive the full 10-year period. The Super Visa is only valid until the expiry date shown on the visa or in the applicant’s approval documents, depending on how IRCC issued the approval, and that date may be shorter depending on the applicant’s circumstances. For visa-required applicants, this is usually shown on the visa in the passport. For some visa-exempt applicants, IRCC may issue a Super Visa approval letter and require an eTA for travel.
In practice, the actual validity can be affected by factors such as:
- the validity of the applicant’s passport
- the validity of the applicant’s biometrics, if applicable
- the immigration officer’s assessment of the case
Because of this, two people applying for a Super Visa may receive visas with different expiry dates, even if both meet the general program requirements. In some cases, a Super Visa may be issued for less than 10 years because it generally cannot be issued beyond the validity of the applicant’s passport or biometrics.
What multiple-entry validity means
The Super Visa is issued as a multiple-entry visa. This allows the holder to travel to Canada multiple times during the period the visa remains valid.
In practical terms, this means the holder can travel to Canada multiple times during the validity period without applying for a new Super Visa each time, as long as the existing approval remains valid.
Even with a valid Super Visa, entry to Canada is still assessed each time the person arrives at the border.
When the validity period begins and ends
The validity period generally starts when the visa is issued and ends on the expiry date shown on the visa. During that window, the visa can be used for travel to Canada. Once it expires, it can no longer be used for future entry, even if the holder previously used it without any issues.
To use the Super Visa for travel, the holder must also have a valid passport. If the passport expires earlier, that can affect the length of visa validity that is issued.
Visa validity is different from length of stay
One of the most important points to understand is that visa validity is not the same thing as how long someone is allowed to stay in Canada.
- Visa validity refers to how long the visa can be used to travel to Canada.
- Length of stay refers to how long the person is allowed to remain in Canada after being admitted.
This distinction matters because many people use the word “validity” when they are really asking one of two different questions: how long the Super Visa itself lasts, or how long a parent or grandparent may stay in Canada on one visit.
A Super Visa may remain valid for years, but the authorized stay inside Canada is determined separately under Super Visa rules. The visa’s expiry date controls how long it can be used for travel, while the length of time a person may remain in Canada is a separate matter.
How long you can stay in Canada on a Super Visa
The amount of time a person can stay in Canada on a Super Visa is separate from the validity of the visa itself. A Super Visa may be valid for travel for several years, but the authorized period of stay in Canada is determined under the Super Visa stay rules. IRCC states that the date the person applied for the Super Visa and, in some situations, the date they entered Canada can affect how long they may stay.
Stay duration depends on your situation
- If you applied on or after June 22, 2023
If the Super Visa application was submitted on or after June 22, 2023, the person is eligible to stay in Canada for 5 years at a time. This is the clearest and simplest category under the current rules.
- If you applied before June 22, 2023 and entered Canada before June 22, 2023
If the Super Visa application was submitted before June 22, 2023, and the person also entered Canada before June 22, 2023, they can stay only for the length of time granted by the border officer at the time of entry. IRCC gives the example that if the officer granted 2 years, the person may stay for 2 years.
In this situation, IRCC says the person has two options if they want to stay longer:
- leave Canada before the authorized stay ends and re-enter Canada
- apply to extend their stay in Canada and, if approved, receive an extension of up to 2 years
IRCC also notes that a border officer may allow a stay of 5 years if the person still meets all Super Visa eligibility requirements.
- If you applied before June 22, 2023 and entered Canada on or after June 22, 2023
If the Super Visa application was submitted before June 22, 2023, but the person entered Canada on or after June 22, 2023, they are eligible to stay in Canada for 5 years at a time. IRCC also says that if a border officer grants entry, the person can stay for 5 years even if the officer does not stamp the passport.
Entry to Canada still matters
A valid Super Visa allows a person to travel to Canada and ask to enter, but entry is still assessed at the border. The authorized stay in Canada depends on the rules that apply to that person’s case and, where relevant, on what was granted at entry.
You must maintain valid visitor status
Before status in Canada expires, the person must either:
- leave Canada
- apply to extend their stay
IRCC states that it is the visitor’s responsibility to maintain valid visitor status while in Canada.
Expiry and Validity Limits
A Super Visa is valid only until the expiry date printed on the visa. This date determines how long the visa can be used to travel to Canada.
Once the visa expires:
- it can no longer be used to enter Canada
- a new visa application is required for future travel
The expiry of the visa does not automatically mean the person must leave Canada immediately, as long as they still have valid status inside the country.
What can limit the validity of a Super Visa
Although a Super Visa can be issued for up to 10 years, the actual validity granted may be shorter. This is because the final validity period depends on individual circumstances.
Some of the most common factors that can limit validity include:
- Passport validity: The visa cannot be issued beyond the expiry date of the passport. If the passport expires earlier, the visa validity will be shortened accordingly.
- Immigration officer’s decision: The officer reviewing the application determines the appropriate validity based on the applicant’s situation.
- Application details and supporting Super visa documents: The information provided in the application may affect how long the visa is issued for.
Because of these factors, the validity period can vary from one applicant to another.
Passport expiry and its impact
Passport validity plays a direct role in determining how long a Super Visa is issued for.
If a passport is set to expire in a shorter period:
- the visa will usually be issued only up to the passport’s expiry date
- the applicant will not receive the full possible validity period
For this reason, applicants often consider renewing their passport before applying, especially if it is close to expiry.
What happens after the Super Visa expires
When a Super Visa expires, it affects future travel, not necessarily the person’s current stay in Canada.
- If the person is outside Canada, they must apply for a new visa before traveling again
- If the person is already in Canada, they may remain until the end of their authorized stay, as long as their visitor status is still valid
However, once the visa has expired, it cannot be used for re-entry into Canada.
Staying in Canada after visa expiry
Remaining in Canada is based on visitor status, not the visa’s validity date.
Before their authorized stay ends, a Super Visa holder must:
- leave Canada, or
- apply to extend their stay
Extending stay is a separate process from obtaining a visa. A valid visa allows a person to travel to Canada, while valid status allows them to remain in the country.
