Work During & After Studies

Canada is a leading destination for international students not only because of its high-quality education, but also for the opportunities it provides to gain work experience during and after academic studies. For those pursuing education in Canada, understanding your work rights is an essential part of long-term planning.

If you’re enrolled in a full-time program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), your study permit may authorize you to work off-campus up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks. This allows students to support themselves financially and gain real-world experience while studying. On-campus work is also permitted without a separate work permit, as long as you meet eligibility requirements, such as holding a valid study permit and Social Insurance Number (SIN).

To better understand how working in Canada fits into your overall education and immigration plan, explore our comprehensive Study section. It outlines everything from applying for a study permit to bringing family members and extending your stay.

After completing your program, you may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)—an open work permit that allows you to work for any employer in Canada. The PGWP is valid for up to three years, depending on the length of your academic program. Gaining skilled Canadian work experience through the PGWP can strengthen your profile for permanent residency through the Canadian Experience Class or Provincial Nominee Programs.

It’s important to note that not all programs or institutions qualify for the PGWP. Before applying to a college or university, be sure to verify whether your chosen program is eligible. This step can have a significant impact on your post-study immigration options.

Canada’s work opportunities during and after studies are designed to support international students as they integrate into the workforce and build their future in the country. Whether your goal is to supplement your income or gain experience toward permanent residency, staying informed is key.

Book a consultation with our expert immigration advisors to understand your eligibility for work options as an international student in Canada. We’ll guide you through your study permit conditions, PGWP requirements, and career transition with clarity and confidence.
