Extend Your Study Permit

If you’re an international student in Canada and your study permit is approaching its expiry date, it’s essential to take proactive steps to maintain your legal status. Extending your study permit ensures that you can continue your education uninterrupted and remain compliant with Canadian immigration regulations. This process must be initiated before your current permit expires.

Before starting your extension process, make sure to review the key guidelines outlined under Apply for a Canadian Study Visa, which covers initial application steps, timelines, and important documentation—many of which are also relevant when applying for an extension.

To qualify for a study permit extension, you must still be enrolled in a designated learning institution (DLI) and actively pursuing your studies. It’s important to apply at least 30 days before your current permit expires. If your study permit expires while your application is being processed and you applied on time, you may be eligible to stay in Canada under maintained status until a decision is made.

Your application must include a letter of enrollment or a confirmation of registration from your educational institution, a valid passport, proof of financial support, and an updated explanation of your academic progress and future plans. Be thorough—missing or incomplete information can delay processing or result in a refusal.

Extending your study permit may also affect your eligibility to work on or off campus. It is crucial to ensure your study status remains valid if you’re working part-time during studies or full-time during scheduled breaks.

Keep in mind that a study permit extension does not automatically extend your visa (if applicable). If you plan to travel outside Canada and your Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is about to expire, you will need to apply for a visa renewal separately.

If your permit has already expired, you may still be eligible to apply for a restoration of status within 90 days—but this is not guaranteed and requires a strong explanation.

Book a consultation with our immigration consultants today to avoid gaps in status and ensure a smooth permit extension process.
