Poland to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Last updated:
Are you planning to sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner from Poland to Canada? You may be wondering whether IRCC requires any Poland-specific forms or document rules.
The short answer is: Poland has a few specific document-format requirements, especially for birth and marriage certificates, and missing these small details can delay an otherwise straightforward application.
Based on IRCC’s Poland instructions and the most common Poland-specific pitfalls, here is exactly what you need to prepare to avoid preventable delays.
With Poland, the requirements are simple—but very precise. Submitting full 2-sided civil certificates, clean translations, and complete forms helps ensure a smooth process with fewer clarification requests.
Between 2016 and 2025, our Toronto immigration consultants assisted 144 clients from Poland, giving us a clear understanding of where Poland-based applications tend to get delayed—and how to prevent it. Country-Specific Documents
Additional forms for residents
There are no extra IRCC forms for applicants residing in Poland.
Poland – document instructions
Poland has two important document-format rules:
Birth certificates
- For birth certificates issued in Poland, you must submit a full 2-sided copy (front and back).
Even if the back appears blank, IRCC requires the complete two-page copy.
Marriage certificates
If the marriage was solemnized in Poland, you must provide a full 2-sided copy of the civil marriage certificate issued by the Urząd Stanu Cywilnego (Civil Registry Office).
A church marriage certificate is not accepted as legal proof of marriage.
The Hidden Hurdle
Translations
Most Polish civil documents are in Polish, so you will need certified translations for any document not in English or French.
Submit:
- the original (or required full 2-sided copy), and
- a certified translation meeting IRCC requirements
Ensure names, dates, and document numbers match exactly between the original and translation to avoid clarification requests.
Biometrics
Biometrics are not Poland-specific, but applicants often misunderstand the process.
After you submit your application, IRCC will issue a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL).
You must wait for that letter—you cannot provide biometrics in advance.
Top Mistakes to Avoid
Even with relatively simple requirements, Poland applications are often delayed because applicants:
- submit only the front side of a Polish birth or marriage certificate
- upload a Polish church marriage record instead of the required civil marriage certificate
- provide Polish-language documents without certified translations
- submit unclear or low-quality scans
Attention to detail with these documents prevents IRCC from issuing further document requests.
