Required Civil Documents
Norway does not issue traditional “birth certificates” in the same way as other countries. All civil status is tracked by the Norwegian Tax Administration (Skatteetaten).
- Requirement: You must submit a Confirmation of Birth or Marriage Certificate extracted from the National Population Register (Folkeregisteret).
Tip: You can usually order these documents in English or a multilingual format directly from Skatteetaten, saving you translation costs.
Police Certificates (PCC)
- Requirement: Applicants aged 18+ must provide a Police Certificate of Good Conduct.
- Issuing Authority: This is issued by the Norwegian Police (Politiet).
- Process: You can apply online via the Police website using your BankID.
- Purpose: When applying, select “Immigration/Visa” as the purpose.
Translation Requirements
Request your documents in English directly from the authorities.
If any document is not in English or French, include:
- the original document (or required certified copy), plus
- a certified translation
