Why do spouse visas get rejected in Canada?

Spouse visas in Canada can refer to two main categories: a spousal sponsorship for permanent residence (Spouse PR application), or a temporary visa such as a visitor visa or a spousal open work permit (SOWP). Each has different refusal reasons, but most refusals come down to missing proof, unclear information, or eligibility problems.

IRCC must be convinced that the relationship is genuine and continuing. An officer may refuse the sponsorship application when:

• There isn’t enough proof of time spent together or communication (only wedding photos are provided with no chats, call logs, or daily-life evidence)
• Your relationship timeline looks rushed or unclear
• Form answers or interview details don’t match
• The marriage appears arranged mainly for immigration
• Evidence looks “cherry-picked” instead of showing a complete relationship

Paperwork problems also cause many refusals:

• Incomplete or inconsistent forms
• Missing signature of spouse
• Poor or missing certified translations
• Not responding to IRCC document requests
• Not updating IRCC after major changes (new address, separation, passport, legal issues)
• Outdated PR application forms 
• Gaps in address, work, or travel history

Incorrect or hidden information can lead to misrepresentation, causing a refusal and a 5-year ban.

Some applications are refused due to eligibility issues. For example, a sponsor may be on social assistance (other than disability), in default of a previous undertaking, or the applicant may have criminal, medical, or immigration violations.

• Not enough financial proof
