Ukraine to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Last updated: January, 2026
Sponsoring your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner from Ukraine? While Ukraine generally follows standard IRCC rules and doesn’t have additional country-specific requirements, the ongoing geopolitical situation means Identity and Military documents are scrutinized closely.
From 2016 to 2025, we supported 133 clients from Ukraine through the Canadian immigration process. If you’d like a full overview of spouse sponsorship Canada, you can just book a consultation with our Licensed immigration consultants. Also, you can check our Immigration Consultant Fees.
Country-Specific Documents
Due to the war and mobilization laws, military records are highly sensitive.
- Male Applicants (18-60): While there isn’t a unique “Ukraine-only” form, you must be extremely accurate on Schedule A (IMM 5669) regarding military service.
- Documents: If applicable, submit a copy of the Military ID (Viyiskoviy kvitok) or proof of exemption/deferral. Discrepancies here can lead to long security screening delays.
Required Civil Documents
Ukraine has two types of passports. You must be clear about which one you are submitting.
- Internal Passport: If the applicant has the old blue booklet (Pasport) or the new ID Card (ID-kartka), provide a clear copy.
- Note: If using the old booklet, scan all pages (even blank ones) to show residency stamps (Propiska).
- Passport for Travel Abroad: Submit the bio-page of the valid international passport.
- Marriage Certificate: You must submit the official Civil Marriage Certificate (Svidoctvo pro shlyub).
- Clarification: A church certificate (Vinchannia) is not legally binding in Ukraine. Submit it only as “Proof of Relationship” (evidence of the wedding ceremony), not as the official marriage document.
Police Certificates (PCC)
- Requirement: Applicants aged 18+ must provide a Police Clearance Certificate.
- How to Obtain: You can often obtain this digitally via the Diia portal or the Ministry of Internal Affairs website.
Translation Requirements
If any document is not in English or French, include:
- the original document (or required certified copy), plus
- a certified translation
Make sure names, dates, and document details match exactly between the original and the translation.
