Sweden to Canada Spousal Sponsorship

Last updated: January, 2026

Sponsor spouse or partner from Sweden to Canada

Sponsoring your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner from Sweden? While the process is streamlined, the London Visa Office has very specific expectations regarding Civil Registration documents issued by the Tax Agency.

From 2016 to 2025, we supported 180 clients from Sweden through the Canadian immigration process. If you’d like a full overview of spouse visa Canada requirements, you can just book a consultation with our Canadian immigration representatives. Also, you can check our Immigration Consultant Prices

Travel History (IMM 5562): We strongly recommend completing this form for the principal applicant and all family members aged 18+.

Sweden does not issue traditional “birth certificates.” Instead, all civil status is tracked by the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).

  • Requirement: You must submit a Personbevis (Extract from the Population Register) for birth, marriage, and family composition.
  • Crucial Detail: When ordering this from Skatteverket, request the version “For All Purposes” (Purpose 120) to ensure it includes all necessary parentage and marital history details.
    • Tip: Request this document in English directly from Skatteverket to avoid paying for certified translations.
  • Requirement: Applicants aged 18+ must provide a Police Certificate.
  • Issuing Authority: This is issued by the Swedish Police Authority (Polismyndigheten).
  • Process: You must request the specific extract for “subjects residing abroad” (even if you currently live in Sweden) or for “foreign aid/immigration.”

Note: For online IRCC applications, you must open the envelope to scan the original document. Ensure you order the correct category (442.1) to show your full history.

As mentioned, try to get your Personbevis and Police Certificate issued in English directly from the authorities. If you submit a document in Swedish only, you must provide a certified translation.

If any document is not in English or French, include:

  • the original document (or required certified copy), plus
  • a certified translation

Make sure names, dates, and document details match exactly between the original and the translation.
