Does applying for an open work permit and PR together change the timeline?
Last updated: January, 2026
Applying for an open work permit and permanent residence together does not generally change the sponsorship processing timeline. The spousal open work permit is reviewed separately and is meant to allow inland applicants to work while their PR file is in progress. IRCC still follows the same steps for the PR application—completeness check, biometrics, medical exam, eligibility review, and background checks—regardless of whether a work permit is requested. Couples can review how both parts fit into the overall pathway on the Spousal Sponsorship Program Page.
Some applicants receive their work permit earlier, but this does not influence how soon IRCC completes the permanent residence decision. If additional documents or clarification are needed for the PR file, the PR timeline may be extended regardless of whether a work permit was submitted.
