Required Civil Documents
South Korea does not issue a single ‘Birth Certificate’ or ‘Marriage Certificate’ in the way many Western countries do. IRCC requires specific certificates from the Korean family registration system (Hojeok):
- Family Relation Certificate (Gajok-gwangye-jeungmyeongseo): This is mandatory as it acts as proof of birth and lists family members.
- Marriage Relation Certificate (Honin-gwangye-jeungmyeongseo): This serves as the official Marriage Certificate.
- Old/Deleted Family Census Register (Jejeok Deungbon): This older record is often requested by the visa office for comprehensive background checks.
Note on Translations: The good news is that these documents can often be issued by the Supreme Court of Korea directly in English. If they are issued in Korean, certified translations into English or French are mandatory.
Country-Specific Documents
- Police Certificate: IRCC requires the Criminal (Investigation) Records Check Report (Beomjoe Susagyeongnyeok Hoeboseo) issued by the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA).
- Applicants must specifically request the report with the scope of reference marked as “For permission of foreign country immigration and stay” (외국 입국 체류 허가용)

- Name Consistency and Romanization: Korean applicants must ensure consistent spelling across their passport, all civil records, and IRCC forms. Variations in spacing, hyphenation, or romanization (e.g., Lee vs. Yi, Park vs. Pak) can cause significant processing delays.
