The short answer is yes. While Mexico does not require extra country-specific IRCC forms, many applications are delayed because applicants don’t follow Mexico’s strict rules on government-certified true copies, divorce proof, and the police certificate process.

- There are no extra forms for Mexico.
Government-certified true copies (the #1 Mexico rule)
Official documents issued in Mexico must be provided as government-certified true copies. Copies must be certified as authentic by the government office that issued them and be signed and stamped with an official seal.
Prior divorce in Mexico (the double requirement)
If there was a divorce in Mexico, submit both:
- Divorce certificate issued by the Registro Civil
- Divorce court order issued by the family judge
Name formatting and consistency
Mexican naming conventions (two surnames, accents, spacing) can create differences across documents. Use the passport spelling as the reference, and include a short Letter of Explanation if any variation appears.
Marriage registration
If you had a ceremony, ensure you also have the legally registered marriage record from the appropriate Mexican authority (not only the ceremony evidence).
The Hidden Hurdle
Mexico has country-specific IRCC instructions for police certificates. The document IRCC requests is commonly called:
- “Constancia de datos registrales”
In many cases, IRCC requests the Mexican police certificate after you submit and provides a request letter and/or file number. Be ready to apply promptly if and when IRCC requests it.
Fingerprints note: If fingerprints are required to obtain the Mexican police certificate, this is not the same as giving biometrics for IRCC.
Translation Requirements
Most Mexican civil documents are in Spanish. If a document is not in English or French, submit:
- the original document (or the required certified copy), plus
- a certified translation meeting IRCC requirements
Make sure names and dates match exactly between the original and translation—especially where accents and surname formatting differ.
