Iceland to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Last updated: January, 2026
Sponsoring your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner from Iceland? While the process is streamlined, the London Visa Office expects specific extracts from the national registry, not church documents.
From 2016 to 2025, we supported 46 clients from Iceland through the Canadian immigration process. If you’d like a full overview of spouse sponsorship Canada, you can just book a consultation with our Canadian immigration advisers. Also, you can check our Immigration Consultant Prices.
Country-Specific Documents
Travel History (IMM 5562): We strongly recommend completing this form for the principal applicant and all family members aged 18+.
Required Civil Documents
Iceland uses a centralized database for all civil status.
- Requirement: Do not submit church certificates. You must submit the Confirmation of Birth or Marriage Certificate issued by Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá Íslands).
- Language Hack: You can order these certificates in English directly from the Registers Iceland website. Submitting the English version saves you the cost of certified translations.
Police Certificates (PCC)
- Requirement: Applicants aged 18+ must provide a Criminal Record Certificate.
- Issuing Authority: This is issued by the District Commissioner (Sýslumaður).
- Process: You can apply for this via the Island.is portal or in person at the District Commissioner’s office.
Translation Requirements
Always request your documents in English directly from the authorities.
If any document is not in English or French, include:
- the original document (or required certified copy), plus
- a certified translation
Make sure names, dates, and document details match exactly between the original and the translation.
