How to sponsor your spouse inside Canada?
Last updated: January, 2026
Sponsoring your spouse from inside Canada is known as inland spousal sponsorship. This pathway is designed for couples already living together in Canada, whether the spouse is here as a visitor, worker, or student. A major advantage of inland sponsorship is that it allows couples to stay together during the PR process, and many applicants may qualify for an Open Work Permit for Spouses, giving them the ability to work while waiting for a decision.
- Confirm That Inland Sponsorship Is the Right Option
The inland stream is best when your spouse is already in Canada and can maintain a valid temporary status throughout processing. If they cannot remain in the country, the outland stream may be more appropriate. - Gather the Required Documents
Both partners must collect all IRCC-required documents, including proof of the sponsor’s Canadian status, financial information, identity documents, police certificates, immigration history, and strong relationship evidence such as photos, travel records, communication logs, joint financial documents, and the IMM5532 relationship questionnaire. A complete and clearly organized file helps prevent delays. - Submit the PR Application Online
All forms, supporting documents, and fees must be uploaded through IRCC’s online portal. After submission, IRCC will issue an Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR). - Complete Biometrics and the Medical Exam
IRCC will provide instructions for biometrics and the medical exam, which must be completed on time. - Wait for the Decision
Processing generally takes about 12 months. During this period, your spouse must maintain a valid temporary status in Canada.
