How much money do I need to show for a spouse visa in Canada?

It’s important to understand that “spouse visa Canada” can mean different applications. Each one has different financial rules:

• Visitor visa for spouse (TRV) → must show money
• Spousal sponsorship Canada (PR) → no minimum income, but must show financial stability
• SOWP (open work permit for sponsored spouses) → no minimum, but must show reasonable funds

1. Visitor Visa for a Spouse (TRV) – You MUST show funds

To invite your spouse, partner, or fiancé to visit Canada, IRCC requires proof that the trip is financially realistic. There is no fixed dollar amount, but officers usually expect:

• Bank statements showing enough money for flights, accommodation, and daily expenses
  
• Sponsor’s financial support letter (optional but helpful)
  
• Pay stubs or employment letter of the sponsor
  
• Proof of accommodation in Canada
  
• Ties to the home country to show the visitor will return

2. Spousal Sponsorship Canada (Permanent Residence) – No Minimum Income

For a spouse PR application, IRCC does not set a required income level. The sponsor can still apply even with low income, as long as they are not on social assistance (other than disability). Officers usually look for:

• Job letter, pay stubs, or work history
  
• Most recent tax return (NOA)
  
• Bank savings or assets

3. SOWP (Spousal Open Work Permit) – Reasonable Funds Required

For inland applications where the spouse applies for an open work permit, IRCC checks whether the couple can support themselves until the work permit is approved. Officers may look at:

• Rent or living expenses
  
• Proof the couple won’t rely on social assistance
  

Again, no official minimum, but realistic financial support is required.
