Hong Kong to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Last updated: January, 2026
Sponsoring your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner from Hong Kong SAR? While the process is generally efficient, there are country-specific instructions regarding identity documents and mailing labels that you must follow to the letter.
From 2016 to 2025, we supported 135 clients from Hong Kong through the Canadian immigration process. If you’d like a full overview of spouse visa Canada requirements, you can just book a consultation with our Licensed immigration consultants. Also, you can check our Immigration Consultant Fees.
Country-Specific Documents
IRCC lists specific requirements based on your passport and place of birth.
- Birth Certificates (PRC Born): If you were born in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) after 1996, you must submit a Notarized Medical Certificate of Birth issued by the PRC Ministry of Health. (If unavailable, you must provide a written explanation).
- The “Hukou” Requirement: If you hold a Hong Kong SAR passport, IRCC instructions explicitly ask for a copy of the Hukou (household registry).
- Pro Tip: Many Hong Kong residents do not possess a Hukou (which is typically for Mainland residents). If this applies to you, upload a Letter of Explanation stating you are a permanent resident of Hong Kong without a Mainland household registry.
- Divorce Documents: If you were divorced in Hong Kong, do not submit just the provisional order. You must provide the Absolute Nisi Decree.
Mailing Instructions
Because Chinese characters are essential for accurate delivery in the region, IRCC requires:
- Address Format: Your mailing address must be written in Chinese characters AND English/Pinyin (including the postal code).
- Address Labels: You must include 8 address labels written in Chinese characters.
- Note: For online applications, you can upload a single PDF page containing 8 scanned copies of these labels.
Police Certificates (PCC)
Unlike many other countries, you cannot obtain a Hong Kong Certificate of No Criminal Conviction (CNCC) in advance.
- The Process: Submit your application without the police certificate.
- The Instruction: IRCC will review your file and send you a Request Letter. You must take this letter to the Hong Kong Police Force to apply for the CNCC. The police will then send the certificate directly to IRCC.
Translation Requirements
If any document is not in English or French, include:
- the original document (or required certified copy), plus
- a certified translation
Make sure names, dates, and document details match exactly between the original and the translation.
