Does having a visitor visa impact the timeline of spousal sponsorship?
Last updated: January, 2026
Having an approved visitor visa does not impact the official spousal sponsorship processing time because IRCC handles temporary residence and permanent residence applications separately. A spouse may travel to Canada as a visitor if they meet normal entry requirements, but this does not accelerate or delay IRCC’s review of the sponsorship application. Applicants who want to understand how these pathways differ can review the FAQ “Can I bring my spouse to Canada on a visitor visa?”, which explains how temporary entry works alongside sponsorship.
The sponsorship timeline outlined on the Spousal Sponsorship Program Page remains the same whether the spouse is inside Canada or outside Canada as a visitor. IRCC still completes the same relationship assessment, background and security screening, and admissibility checks regardless of the spouse’s temporary status. While some applicants choose to apply for an Open Work Permit for Spouses after entering Canada on a visitor visa, this also does not affect how quickly IRCC processes the final PR decision.
Because the visitor visa and sponsorship streams move independently, delays can still occur if the sponsorship file is missing documents, if IRCC requests clarifications, or if additional review is needed for medical or security checks. For this reason, applicants should focus on preparing a complete sponsorship package rather than relying on a temporary visa to influence the processing timeline.
