Can I call IRCC to speed up my application?

You can call IRCC, but it’s important to understand what that phone call can and cannot do. Calling IRCC does not make your application for spouse sponsorship move faster just because you asked. The call-center agents usually see the same status messages that appear in your online account, such as “in process,” “medical passed,” or “background checks in progress.” They cannot jump your sponsorship application ahead of others or bypass normal processing times.

If you want to know what actually helps reduce delays, see our FAQ about ways to speed up spouse visas.

So why do people call? A call or webform message is still useful for things like:

  • fixing your contact information (email, phone, address)
  • asking what a confusing IRCC letter means
  • checking if IRCC received a document you sent
  • reporting a major life change, such as a new baby, a new passport, or a new address, often requiring the updated signature of the spouse

These actions don’t speed the process directly, but they help prevent delays caused by missing information or mistakes.

There is something called urgent processing, but it only applies in rare and serious situations. IRCC may look at a file sooner when there is:

  • a major medical emergency
  • a safety risk involving a child or family member
  • an upcoming removal or deportation date
  • a strict court or legal deadline

Even in these cases, IRCC needs strong proof, and “urgent” still doesn’t guarantee a fast approval—it just means an officer may review the file earlier.

In short: you can call IRCC, and sometimes you should, but the call itself won’t speed things up. The best way to avoid delays is to send a complete sponsorship application, answer IRCC requests quickly, and keep your information up to date.

It’s always good to clarify your own case to know if your matter is urgent under IRCC rules. Only then call them with your request and documents. Better to book a consultation with Licensed immigration consultants to understand your specific case and ask questions related to Canada spouse sponsorship.
