Zimbabwe to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants from Zimbabwe do not have additional Zimbabwe-specific IRCC forms or special country-specific document requirements for spousal sponsorship. Applications should therefore follow the standard IRCC spousal sponsorship instructions and document checklist, with careful attention to complete identity and civil-status documents, required translations and clear evidence supporting the relationship.
Canada’s spousal sponsorship program allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner for permanent residence. IRCC assesses the sponsor’s eligibility, the genuineness of the relationship and the sponsored applicant’s admissibility before making a final decision.
IRCC permanent residence statistics show that 225 Zimbabwean citizens were admitted to Canada as sponsored spouses or partners from 2023 through May 2026. This included 55 admissions in 2023, 95 in 2024, 50 in 2025 and 25 from January to May 2026.
Zimbabwe to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Zimbabwe must follow the Pretoria visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Pretoria Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5845, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Zimbabwe applicants, IMM 5845 focuses on passport and legal status documents, a one-page study plan, student records, proof and sources of funds, third-party sponsorship details, and scholarship or tuition-payment evidence where applicable.
Required Forms
Zimbabwe study permit applicants must follow the Pretoria Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.

Passport Documents
Zimbabwe study permit applicants must provide passport documents as listed by the Pretoria visa office.
Required passport documents include:
- a valid passport for each person requiring a temporary resident visa
- a photocopy of the bio-data page of the applicant’s passport
- a photocopy of the bio-data page for each accompanying dependant, if applicable
The passport should be valid for at least six months from the date of travel to Canada.
Applicants will be asked to submit original passports once all requirements have been met.
Legal Status
Applicants must provide proof of residence, immigration, or visa status if they are residents but not citizens of their country of residence.
This requirement applies when the applicant is living in a country where they are not a citizen.
The document should show the applicant’s legal status in the country where they are residing.
Student Records
Applicants from Zimbabwe must provide documents showing their current and previous studies.
Required student records may include:
- transcripts from the educational institution the applicant is attending
- copies of high school certificates or diplomas
- records from any post-secondary studies
Applicants must also provide a one-page study plan.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada in the accepted program
- the applicant’s overall educational goal
- why the applicant is not pursuing a similar program in the country of residence
- what research the applicant has done into studies in the country of residence or citizenship
- how the program will improve employment opportunities in the country of residence or citizenship
- what ties the applicant has to the country of residence or citizenship
If the applicant has been out of full-time education for more than two years, they must provide a curriculum vitae or resumé.
Financial Documents
Zimbabwe study permit applicants must provide proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for at least one year in Canada.
Required financial documents include:
- supporting documents showing a reliable source of available funds that can be converted to Canadian dollars
- a letter of undertaking and bank statements from a parent or sponsor covering the past three to six months
- official scholarship or financial award letters, if applicable
- investment documents, if applicable
Deed documents and property or vehicle ownership documents are not accepted as proof of funds.
If the applicant has received a scholarship or already paid tuition, they must provide a receipt from the educational institution in Canada confirming the payment or funding.
If a third person is sponsoring the studies, that person must provide supporting documents such as:
- bank statements
- employment records
- a letter with current contact information explaining why they will finance the studies
- proof of relationship to the applicant, if the sponsor is a relative
If the third-party sponsor is in Canada, the sponsor’s letter must include their name, address, telephone number, and email address.
The sponsor must also provide:
- proof of legal residence in Canada
- proof of employment, including years of service and salary
- a bank statement
- a copy of the summary page of the most recent Canada Revenue Agency notice of assessment
Zimbabwe to Canada Visitor Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada visitor visa from Zimbabwe must follow the Pretoria Visa Office Instructions, IMM 5971, alongside the standard temporary resident visa requirements. These regional instructions apply to Zimbabwe and several southern African countries; IRCC does not publish a separate Zimbabwe-only checklist.
For Zimbabwe applicants, the checklist may require document-verification consent, certified translations, previous-passport evidence, and proof of legal status outside the country of citizenship. It outlines CAN+ eligibility, financial and employment evidence, and additional documents for family visits, business travel, conferences, students, and Super Visa applications for parents and grandparents.
Visa Office
IRCC does not publish a separate Zimbabwe-only visitor visa checklist.
For visitor visa applications from Zimbabwe, the official visa-office document available through IRCC is the Pretoria Visa Office Instructions, IMM 5971 E (11-2019).
The checklist applies to:

Document Rules
According to the Pretoria checklist, applicants may need the Consent to verification of documents form.
Documents that are not in English or French need a certified translation.
The checklist also points to previous-passport evidence and a work permit or temporary stay permit for applicants who do not live in their country of citizenship.
Financial Documents
The Pretoria checklist includes a CAN+ option for some applicants.
If the applicant has travelled to Canada in the last 10 years or currently holds a valid United States nonimmigrant visa and can provide proof, proof of financial support may not be needed.
For other applicants, financial examples include:
- employment letter
- pay slips for the past three months
- proof of pension
- business registration
- investments
When someone else funds the trip, applicants may need to include:
- letter signed by the person paying
- official photo identification from the person paying
- supporting documents showing that the person has sufficient funds
- documents dated within three months of the application date
Specific Situations
Some Pretoria checklist items depend on the applicant’s situation.
For employed applicants, the employment letter should show:
- employment status
- length of service
- position
- salary and allowances
- authorized leave for the stay in Canada
- expected return-to-work date
For self-employed applicants, examples include:
- business registration
- licence
- financial documents
For applicants visiting a friend or relative, examples include:
- invitation letter
- host’s immigration status in Canada, if provided by the host
- proof of relationship, if applicable
For business travel, examples include:
- business registration
- financial documents, such as income tax statements, accounting documents, end-of-year financial report, and bank statements
- official invitation from business contacts in Canada
- Canadian contact names, addresses, telephone numbers, and fax numbers
- purpose and length of trip
- funding arrangements
For a conference, training, or official visit, examples include:
- mission order or verbal note
- employer letter stamped, signed, and dated within the current month
- detailed reason for travel
- length of stay
- traveller’s position
- official invitation from Canadian contacts
- proof of conference registration
- proof of financial support for travel, transportation, and expenses in Canada
Additional Documents
The Pretoria checklist also includes some family, school, and super visa items. For applicants attending school, examples include:
- proof of enrolment
- current letter from the educational institution
- transcript from the educational institution
For family documents, examples include:
- marriage certificate
- birth certificates for each family member applying for a visa
For parent and grandparent super visa applicants, examples include:
- invitation letter from the child or grandchild in Canada
- details about care and support arrangements
- number of people in the inviter’s household
- proof of relationship, such as birth certificate, baptismal certificate, or another official
- document naming the applicant as a parent
- proof that the child or grandchild meets the Low Income Cut-Off
- proof of private medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company
