Syria to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants applying for spousal sponsorship from Syria must follow the country-specific IRCC instructions alongside the standard sponsorship application checklist. These instructions identify the additional forms, civil-status records, identity documents, and supporting evidence that may be required for an application involving Syrian nationals.
For Syria applicants, the requirements include IMM 5562 for travel history, IMM 5546 for certain applicants with a senior government, military, defence, police, or National Service history, certified civil-document copies, and passport-page copies. Syrian passport holders and included family members must provide a civil status certificate issued within the previous six months, as well as military card or booklet copies where applicable.
Required Forms
Applicants from Syria must complete the following country-specific forms where applicable:
- Supplementary Information – Your Travels [IMM 5562]
- Required for the principal applicant.
- Required for all family members included in the application who are 18 years old or older.
- Details of Military Service [IMM 5546]
- Required for anyone included in the application who has ever:
- held a high-ranking or senior official government position, or
- served in the military, army, defence, or police unit, including National Service.
- Required for anyone included in the application who has ever:
If IMM 5546 applies, submit a copy of all pages of the person’s military card or booklet, including blank pages.
Civil Documents
All submitted Syrian civil documents must be certified copies.
If the principal applicant holds a Syrian passport, the principal applicant and family members included in the application must also provide a copy of a civil status certificate issued within the last 6 months.
Passport History
If the principal applicant holds a Syrian passport, the principal applicant and family members included in the application must provide copies of the first 4 pages of each passport.
The passport copies must include the page showing the valid dates.
Military Documents
If IMM 5546 applies, applicants must submit a copy of every page of the person’s military card or booklet, including pages with no entries.
Syria to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Syria must follow the local visa office instructions assigned to their application. IRCC lists two study permit visa office instruction options for applicants in Syria: the Amman checklist and the Beirut checklist.
These checklists are used with the standard Canada study permit checklist, but they do not ask for the same supporting documents. Syria applicants should review the checklist assigned to their file and prepare the documents required under that specific visa office instruction.
Required Forms
Syria study permit applicants may need to follow one of two visa office additional document checklists.
Country-specific checklists:

- Beirut Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5820
These checklists are used alongside the standard study permit checklist and do not replace the general study permit requirements.
Applicants should follow the checklist assigned to their application package, as the Amman and Beirut visa office instructions may require different supporting documents.
Amman Checklist
Syria study permit applicants following the Amman visa office instructions should provide documents showing their academic background, study purpose, financial capacity, work history and travel history.
Applicants may need to include:
- transcripts and graduation certificates from all institutions they previously attended;
- language test results obtained within the previous two years;
- a one-page personal statement explaining their goals and how the proposed study plan aligns with their academic background and future career plans;
- bank statements covering the previous six months, either in their own name or in the name of their financial sponsor;
- supporting documents from a sponsor or host in Canada, where applicable;
- employment or self-employment records if they worked within the previous three years; and
- scanned copies of all pages of their current passport and a complete, detailed travel history if they have travelled outside their country of residence.
Applicants must indicate whether they used a translator, software or artificial intelligence to prepare the personal statement.
Beirut Checklist
Syria study permit applicants following the Beirut visa office instructions should provide documents related to their identity, background, education and financial capacity.
Applicants may need to include:
- a valid passport for each person who requires a temporary resident visa;
- any cancelled or expired passports, where applicable;
- a police certificate with a translation;
- proof of current immigration status, if the applicant is not a citizen of Lebanon;
- the most recent diploma obtained or, if the diploma is unavailable, the latest grades certified by the Ministry of Education;
- employment letters explaining any gaps in the applicant’s academic history;
- bank statements or a bank book covering the previous four months;
- additional documents showing that the funds come from a reliable source;
- a notarized letter of undertaking and supporting financial documents from a parent or sponsor, where applicable; and
- evidence of scholarships, investments, rental income, tuition payments or other sources of funds, where applicable.
Military and Service History
Military or service-history documents may be required for Syria study permit applicants because both listed visa office checklists include service-related instructions in certain circumstances.
Applicants following the Amman visa office instructions may need to provide:
- a scanned copy of the original military service booklet, together with an English or French translation; and
- Details of Military Service — IMM 5546.
Applicants following the Beirut visa office instructions who have served in the military or police may need to submit Details of Military Service — IMM 5546 with complete information about their service, including:
- service dates;
- ranks and titles;
- duties and responsibilities;
- unit names and locations; and
- details of any involvement in arrests, detention, interrogation, support functions or combat operations, where applicable.
