Sri Lanka to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants applying for spousal sponsorship from Sri Lanka must follow the country-specific IRCC instructions alongside the standard sponsorship application checklist. These instructions identify the additional military-service form and supporting documents that may be required for an application involving Sri Lankan nationals.
For Sri Lanka applicants, anyone included in the application who has held a senior government position or served in the military, army, defence, police, or National Service must complete Details of Military Service (IMM 5546). Where applicable, copies of military cards or booklets must also be provided.
Sri Lanka to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Sri Lanka must follow the Colombo visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Colombo Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5934, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Sri Lanka applicants, IMM 5934 focuses on a one-page study plan, English-language evidence where applicable, financial documents for at least one year of study in Canada, third-party sponsor documents, and signed consent to verify submitted documents.
Required Forms
Sri Lanka study permit applicants must follow the Colombo Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.
Country-specific checklist:
IMM 5934 is used alongside the standard study permit checklist. It does not replace the general study permit requirements.
The checklist also includes a Consent to Verification of Documents section. Applicants must sign this section to authorize IRCC and CBSA to verify submitted documents with the relevant issuing authorities. For a minor applicant, a parent or guardian must also sign where required.
Study Plan
Sri Lanka study permit applicants must provide a one-page study plan explaining the purpose of their proposed studies in Canada and how the program fits their educational and career plans.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada in the program to which they have been accepted;
- the applicant’s overall educational goal;
- why they are not pursuing a similar program in their country of residence;
- what research they have conducted into available study options in their country of residence or citizenship;
- how the proposed Canadian program may improve their employment opportunities in their country of residence or citizenship; and
- the ties they have to their country of residence or citizenship.
Applicants who have been out of full-time education for more than two years should also provide a CV or resumé.
Language Evidence
Sri Lanka study permit applicants should provide evidence of their English-language competency, where applicable.
Applicants whose first language is not English should include full details of any English-language qualifications they have obtained, together with supporting documents.
Financial Evidence
Sri Lanka study permit applicants should provide evidence that they have sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for at least one year in Canada.
Applicants should include:
- bank statements or a bank book covering the previous four months;
- additional documents showing that the funds come from a reliable source, such as a financial undertaking from a parent or sponsor, a scholarship or financial award, investments, rental income or similar evidence; and
- proof of payment if tuition fees have already been paid.
When a third party is sponsoring the applicant’s studies, the application should include:
- the sponsor’s supporting financial documents, such as bank statements and employment records; and
- a letter explaining why the sponsor is providing financial support.
If the third-party sponsor lives in Canada, the letter should include the sponsor’s name, address, telephone number and email address. The application should also include:
- proof that the sponsor legally resides in Canada;
- proof of employment showing the sponsor’s length of service and salary;
- a bank statement; and
- the summary page of the sponsor’s most recent Canada Revenue Agency income tax statement.
Sri Lanka to Canada Super Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada Super Visa from Sri Lanka should follow the Colombo visa office instructions in addition to the standard Super Visa checklist. These instructions are listed in the Colombo Visa Office Instructions — IMM 5866, which applies to applicants from Sri Lanka and Maldives.
For Sri Lanka applicants, IMM 5866 includes Super Visa-specific instructions on private medical insurance, an upfront medical examination, the invitation and financial-support undertaking, proof of the inviter’s status and household, relationship evidence, and Canadian-source proof of the inviter’s financial ability.
Medical Insurance
Applicants from Sri Lanka are assigned to the Colombo visa office instructions:
For a Parents and Grandparents Super Visa, IMM 5866 requires evidence of private medical insurance.
The insurance must:
- be from a Canadian insurance company
- be valid for a minimum of 1 year from the date of entry
- provide minimum coverage of $100,000
Upfront Medical
Applicants must provide proof that they have undergone a medical examination with one of the panel physicians for Sri Lanka and Maldives.
Applicants must tell the panel physician that they intend to be a visitor to Canada.
When visiting the panel physician, applicants must bring:
- 5 photos meeting the photograph specifications
- photo identification
- a photocopy of the passport bio-data page
After the medical examination, the panel physician will provide one copy of the medical examination form. Applicants must submit this form with the Super Visa application.
Invitation Letter
Applicants must provide a written and signed invitation letter from their inviter in Canada.
The invitation letter must promise financial support for the duration of the applicant’s visit.
Applicants must also include:
- a copy of the inviter’s citizenship or immigration status document
- a copy of the inviter’s birth certificate to establish the relationship
Household Size and Financial Support
Applicants must provide information showing the number of people in the inviter’s household and evidence that the inviter can provide the promised financial support.
IMM 5866 lists supporting financial documents such as:
- Notices of Assessment for the previous three tax years
- an employment letter showing salary
- pay stubs
- bank statements
The household-size information is used together with the inviter’s financial documents when assessing whether the financial requirement is met.
