Country-Specific Documents
Somalia is one of the few countries where IRCC demands five identity photos per person — not the usual one or two.
Why?
Because official civil records in Somalia vary by region, IRCC relies on multiple photos to confirm identity and ensure consistency across documents.
Every applicant must submit:
- 2 standard PR photos, plus
- 3 additional photos (same format)
Missing the extra photos is a very common cause of delays for Somali files.
Other “Must-have” Documents
Somalia requires two country-specific forms that IRCC uses to verify background and mobility:
✓ IMM 5562 – Supplementary Travel History
Required for all applicants 18+, even if they never traveled.✓ IMM 5546 – Details of Military or Government Service
Required if the applicant has ever:- served in the military, police, or national security forces, OR
- held a senior or official government position.
If this applies, IRCC also requires a full scan of the military booklet/card — every page, including blank ones.
Required Civil Documents
Somalia does not have a centralized civil registry, which means IRCC evaluates documents more cautiously. You should be prepared to provide:
- Marriage certificate(s) or religious marriage evidence
- Birth certificates or community-issued identity documents
- Divorce certificates, separation documents, or death certificates (if previously married)
All Somali documents must be translated into English or French by a certified translator and submitted with the original-language version.
If certain civil documents do not exist — which is common — IRCC accepts:
- Sworn affidavits from elders or community leaders
- Letters of explanation
- Supporting records such as school files, hospital records, or older passport applications
The more official your evidence, the stronger your case.
