Sierra Leone to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants applying for spousal sponsorship from Sierra Leone must follow the country-specific IRCC instructions alongside the standard sponsorship application checklist. These instructions identify the additional forms and supporting documents that may be required for an application involving Sierra Leonean nationals.
For Sierra Leone applicants, the requirements include Supplementary Information – Your Travels (IMM 5562), Details of Military Service (IMM 5546) for certain applicants with a senior government, military, defence, police, or National Service history, and copies of all military-card or booklet pages where applicable. Additional documents are also required when a child’s Sierra Leonean birth certificate was not issued at the time of birth.
Country-Specific Documents
Applicants from Sierra Leone must complete the following country-specific forms where applicable:
- Supplementary Information – Your Travels [IMM 5562]
- Required for the principal applicant.
- Required for all family members included in the application who are 18 years old or older.
- Details of Military Service [IMM 5546]
- Required for anyone included in the application who has ever:
- held a high-ranking or senior official government position, or
- served in the military, army, defence, or police unit, including National Service.
- Required for anyone included in the application who has ever:
If IMM 5546 applies, submit a copy of all pages of the person’s military card or booklet, including blank pages.
Children’s Documents
If a child’s Sierra Leonean birth certificate was not issued at the time of birth, applicants must submit copies of:
- the supplementary judgment
- another official document naming the parents
- school documents listing the parents
- the household registry
If school documents listing the parents cannot be obtained, applicants must provide an explanation.
Sierra Leone to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Sierra Leone must follow the Accra visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Accra Visa Office Additional Document Checklist, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Sierra Leone applicants, the local requirements focus on recommended application timing, current and previous passports, a one-page study plan, current study records, bank statements, third-party sponsorship details, and evidence of ties where applicable.
Required Forms

Intake Timing
The Accra visa office gives specific application timing guidance for Sierra Leone study permit applicants.
Recommended timing:
- for September admission, apply in May or June
- for January admission, apply in September or October
Applicants should not treat paid administration or tuition fees as a guarantee of approval before receiving the Letter of Authorization to study in Canada.
Passport Documents
Sierra Leone study permit applicants must provide passport documents as listed by the Accra visa office.
Required passport documents include:
- a copy of the bio-data page
- copies of all visas
- copies of entry and exit stamps from a valid passport for each person requiring a temporary resident visa
Applicants should not submit the original passport with the application, because it may be required for the medical examination.
Applicants should also include all original cancelled or expired passports, if applicable.
If the applicant does not live in their country of citizenship, they must provide their work permit or temporary resident permit.
Student Records
Applicants from Sierra Leone must provide documents showing their current or recent studies.
Required student records include:
a current letter from the educational institution the applicant is attending
a current transcript from the educational institution the applicant is attending
transcript or transcripts from the last school year
Applicants must also provide a one-page study plan.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada in the accepted program
- the applicant’s overall educational goal
- why the applicant is not pursuing a similar program in the country of residence
- what research the applicant has done into studies in the country of residence or citizenship
- how the program will improve employment opportunities in the country of residence or citizenship
- what ties the applicant has to the country of residence or citizenship
If the applicant has been out of full-time education for more than two years, they must provide a curriculum vitae or resumé.
Financial Documents
Sierra Leone study permit applicants must provide financial documents showing funds for tuition and living expenses for at least one year in Canada.
Required financial documents include:
- copies of bank statements or a bank book covering the past four months
- documents showing a reliable source of funds
- proof of tuition payment, if tuition has already been paid
Reliable source-of-funds documents may include:
- a letter of undertaking and financial documents from a parent or sponsor
- an official scholarship or financial award letter
- investments
- income from rental properties
If a third person is sponsoring the studies, that person must provide supporting documents, such as bank statements and employment documents, and write a letter explaining why they will finance the studies.
If the third person is a relative, the applicant must provide proof of relationship, such as birth certificates.
If the third-party sponsor is in Canada, the sponsor’s letter must include their name, address, telephone number, email, proof of legal residence in Canada, proof of employment with years of service and salary, a bank statement, and a copy of the summary page of their last Canada Revenue Agency income tax statement.
Applicants may also provide family, financial, employment, or property-ties documents to support their return to their country of residence after their stay.
Sierra Leone to Canada Visitor Visa
IRCC does not provide a separate document checklist for Canadian visitor visa applicants from Sierra Leone. Applicants should therefore follow the standard IRCC visitor visa requirements and submit the supporting documents requested through their online application.
IRCC recorded 305 visitor visas for Sierra Leone in 2023, 255 in 2024, and 235 in 2025, followed by 110 from January to June 2026.
A Canadian visitor visa can allow eligible Sierra Leonean travellers to visit Canada temporarily for purposes such as tourism, visiting family or friends, or certain business activities. The supporting documents required will depend on the applicant’s individual circumstances, purpose of travel, financial situation, and plans for their temporary stay in Canada.
