Qatar to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants applying for spousal sponsorship from Qatar must follow the country-specific IRCC instructions alongside the standard sponsorship application checklist. These instructions identify the additional forms and supporting documents that may be required for an application involving Qatari nationals.
For Qatar applicants, the requirements include IMM 5562 for travel history, IMM 5546 for certain applicants with a senior government, military, defence, police, or National Service history, and military card or booklet copies where applicable. Additional divorce documents are also required if the applicant obtained a divorce in Qatar.
Required Forms
Applicants from Qatar must complete the following country-specific forms where applicable:
- Supplementary Information – Your Travels (IMM 5562)
- Required for the principal applicant.
- Required for all family members included in the application who are 18 years old or older.
- Details of Military Service (IMM 5546)
- Required for anyone included in the application who has ever:
- held a high-ranking or senior official government position; or
- served in the military, army, defence, or police unit, including National Service.

If IMM 5546 applies, applicants must also submit a copy of all pages of the person’s military card or booklet, including blank pages.
Divorce Documents
If the applicant obtained a divorce in Qatar, they must submit a copy of either:
- the final irrevocable divorce; or
- the final divorce judgment.
Qatar to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Qatar must follow the Abu Dhabi visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Abu Dhabi Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5814, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Qatar applicants, IMM 5814 focuses on passport validity and blank-page rules, Gulf residence visa evidence where applicable, proof of funds and reliable source-of-funds documents, third-party financial support, scholarship or tuition-payment documents, family documents where applicable, and a one-page study plan.
Required Forms
Qatar study permit applicants must follow the Abu Dhabi Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.

- Schedule 1: Application for Temporary Residence — IMM 5257 SCH1, only if the applicant answered “yes” to any background information questions on the application form
IMM 5814 is used alongside the standard study permit checklist and sets out the additional documents expected under the Abu Dhabi visa office instructions.
Passport and Residence Visa
Qatar applicants must provide passport documents as listed by the Abu Dhabi visa office.
Each person travelling, including children, must have their own passport.
The passport must have:
- at least one blank page
- validity for at least one month from the date the applicant intends to leave Canada
If the processing time for the application category exceeds two weeks and the applicant does not want to submit the original passport for the full processing period, they must provide a photocopy of the complete passport pages.
Applicants must also provide a copy of their most recent Gulf residence visa if it is not affixed to their valid passport.
Financial Documents
Qatar study permit applicants must provide proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for at least one year in Canada.
Applicants must also provide supporting documents showing a reliable source of funds that can be converted to Canadian dollars.
Relevant financial documents may include:
- a letter of undertaking and financial documents from a parent or sponsor
- an official scholarship or financial award letter
- investments
- income from rental properties
- bank statements covering several months
If tuition has already been paid, the applicant must provide proof of payment.
If the applicant receives a scholarship or award related to the study program, they must include the related scholarship or award documents.
If someone other than the applicant’s parents is providing financial support, the applicant must include:
- details of how the studies will be funded
- the applicant’s relationship to the person or institution providing the funding
- a detailed explanation of why that person or institution is providing financial support
- evidence of the sponsor’s financial ability to fund the education
Family and Medical Documents
Qatar applicants must provide additional family or medical documents where applicable.
These may include:
- copies of birth certificates for minor children
- a marriage certificate
- a Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union — IMM 5409
- a copy of the eMedical form if medical examinations have already been completed
For minors travelling alone or with only one parent, applicants must provide:
- proof of custody or a consent letter from the non-accompanying parent
- a copy of the non-accompanying parent’s civil identity document showing their signature
Study Plan
Qatar applicants must provide a one-page study plan.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada in the program where they were accepted
- the applicant’s overall educational goal
- why the applicant is not pursuing a similar program in the country of residence or citizenship
- what research the applicant has done into studies in the country of residence or citizenship
- how the program will improve employment opportunities in the country of residence or citizenship
- what ties the applicant has to the country of residence or citizenship
For a minor applicant, the study plan should also explain the reasons for studying in Canada and provide information about the immigration status of the applicant’s parents or guardians in their current country of residence.
The study plan should also include the applicant’s education history, including the start and end dates of each course, the name and address of the school, the course taken, and the qualification, degree, or certificate awarded.
Qatar to Canada Visitor Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada visitor visa from Qatar must follow the Abu Dhabi visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Abu Dhabi Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5853, which is used together with the standard Canada visitor visa checklist.
For Qatar applicants, IMM 5853 focuses on passport and Gulf residence visa documents, proof of funds, financial support from another person where applicable, business or self-employment documents, information about the proposed stay in Canada, proof of current studies where applicable, and documents for minors travelling alone or with one parent.
Required Forms and Passport Documents
Qatar visitor visa applicants must follow the Abu Dhabi Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for temporary resident visas.

- Schedule 1: Application for Temporary Residence — IMM 5257 SCH1, only if the applicant answered “yes” to any background information questions on the application form
Applicants must provide a valid passport or travel document.
Each person travelling, including children, must have their own passport.
The passport must:
- have at least one blank page
- be valid for at least one month from the date the applicant plans to leave Canada
If the processing time for the application category exceeds two weeks, submitting the original passport with the application is optional.
Documents that are not in English or French must be accompanied by a certified translation.
Residence Visa and Financial Documents
Qatar applicants must provide a copy of their most recent Gulf residence visa if it is not affixed to their valid passport.
Applicants must also provide proof of sufficient financial support to cover the expenses for the duration of their visit.
Applicants should provide:
- copies of bank statements or a bank book covering the previous three months
- additional relevant financial documents, such as an employment letter, pay slips, proof of pension, business registration documents, or investments
If someone else is paying for the trip, the applicant must provide:
- a signed letter from the person paying explaining how they are related to the applicant
- a photocopy of that person’s passport or other official photo identification
- a bank certificate showing that the person has sufficient funds
These third-party financial documents must be dated within three months of the date the application is submitted.
Employment and Business Documents
If a Qatar applicant is travelling for business, they must provide:
- a letter from their employer explaining the purpose of the visit
- a letter from the host company in Canada explaining the purpose of the visit
- information showing who will pay the travel costs
Self-employed applicants or business owners must provide:
- a copy of the company trade licence showing its expiry date and the number of shareholders
- an English or French translation of the trade licence
- personal bank statements covering the previous three months
Applicants may also provide any other relevant documents they wish to submit in support of the application.
Proposed Stay in Canada
Qatar applicants must provide information about their proposed stay in Canada.
Applicants should provide:
- an invitation letter and documents related to the host in Canada
- registration documents for events or programs they plan to attend
Where applicable, applicants may also provide:
- a flight itinerary
- hotel reservations
- proof of travel insurance
These documents help explain the purpose and arrangements of the proposed visit to Canada.
Students and Minor Travellers
Applicants who are currently studying must provide an official document confirming their registration as a student at an academic institution.
For minors travelling alone or with only one parent, applicants must provide:
- proof of custody or a consent letter from the non-accompanying parent
- a consent letter accompanied by a copy of the non-accompanying parent’s civil identity document showing their signature, such as the biographical and signature pages of a passport
These requirements apply only where relevant to the applicant’s circumstances.
