Malaysia to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants from Malaysia do not have additional Malaysia-specific IRCC forms or special country-specific document requirements for spousal sponsorship. Applications should therefore follow the standard IRCC spousal sponsorship instructions and document checklist, with careful attention to complete identity and civil-status documents, required translations and clear evidence supporting the relationship.
Canada’s spousal sponsorship program allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner for permanent residence. IRCC assesses the sponsor’s eligibility, the genuineness of the relationship and the sponsored applicant’s admissibility before making a final decision.
IRCC permanent residence statistics show that 290 Malaysian citizens were admitted to Canada as sponsored spouses or partners from 2023 through May 2026. This included 90 admissions in 2023, 90 in 2024, 80 in 2025 and 30 from January to May 2026.
Malaysia to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Malaysia must follow the Singapore visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Singapore Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5850, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Malaysia applicants, IMM 5850 focuses on academic documents, a one-page study plan, detailed financial evidence, parent or sponsor income documents, and IELTS Academic results where available.
Required Forms
Malaysia study permit applicants must follow the Singapore Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.
Country-specific checklist:
IMM 5850 is used alongside the standard study permit checklist. It does not replace the general study permit requirements.
Student Records
Applicants from Malaysia should provide academic documents confirming their post-secondary education history.
Applicants should include:
- notarized copies of any university or college diploma they have received; and
- transcripts for every program they have attended.
Applicants who have not yet graduated should indicate their expected graduation date and whether they will receive a degree, diploma or certificate.
Applicants are also strongly encouraged to provide IELTS Academic results obtained within the previous year as evidence of their language proficiency and to confirm that they meet the educational institution’s language requirements.
Study Plan
Malaysia study permit applicants must provide a one-page study plan explaining why they want to study in Canada and how the proposed program fits their educational background and career plans.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada in the program to which they have been accepted;
- the applicant’s overall educational goal;
- why they are not pursuing a similar program in their country of residence or citizenship;
- how the program may improve their employment opportunities in their country of residence or citizenship; and
- the ties they have to their country of residence or citizenship.
Applicants who have been out of full-time education for more than two years should also provide a CV.
Financial Evidence
Malaysia study permit applicants should provide detailed evidence showing that they have sufficient funds to pay for their studies in Canada.
Applicants should provide proof of accumulated funds covering at least the previous four months, including:
- a bank book or bank statement showing the account balance and financial history for at least four months;
- a written explanation of the source of the funds; and
- documents supporting other assets, where applicable, such as investments, bonds, real estate, rental income, pension income or business transactions.
The application should also include evidence of the applicant’s parents’ income or employment. This may include original employment letters for each parent showing the employer’s details, date of hire, position, salary, bonuses and any additional income, or income tax documents for the previous two years.
If a parent owns all or part of a business, applicants should provide:
- a notarized business registration or licence showing the parent’s ownership share;
- business tax assessments for the previous two years; and
- audited financial statements and capital verification reports for the most recent fiscal year.
When someone other than a parent is providing financial support, the same financial documents should be submitted for that person. The applicant should also provide a written explanation of why the person is offering financial support and proof of their relationship, where applicable.
Employed applicants should provide original employment letters and income tax documents or notices of assessment for the previous two years.
Applicants receiving funding from a Canadian educational institution or another organization should provide an original letter confirming the amount of funding they will receive during each year of the proposed study program.
Malaysia to Canada Visitor Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada visitor visa from Malaysia may need to follow the Singapore visa office instructions. These instructions are listed in the Singapore Visa Office Instructions — IMM 5890, which is used together with the standard temporary resident visa checklist.
For Malaysia applicants, IMM 5890 does not identify any separate Malaysia-specific documents, Malaysian authority records, country-specific forms, or Malaysia-only submission requirements.
Visa Office Instructions
Malaysia visitor visa applicants may need to follow the Singapore Visa Office Instructions in addition to the standard temporary resident visa requirements.
Relevant visa office instructions:
IMM 5890 includes additional instructions concerning financial and employment evidence, CAN+ applicants, business visitors, workers travelling with an employer, students, returning workers, transit applications and official travel.
Financial and Employment Evidence
Applicants should provide documents showing their financial circumstances and current employment or other activity.
Applicants who do not qualify under CAN+ should provide bank statements or bank-book records covering the previous four months. They may also include documents showing income, savings, investments, property or other assets.
If another person is paying for the visit, the application should include:
- a signed letter confirming the financial support;
- evidence that the person has sufficient funds;
- an explanation of the relationship between the applicant and the person providing support; and
- details of the expenses that will be covered.
The financial support documents should be dated within three months of the application.
Employed applicants should provide a recent employer letter confirming their position, salary, length of employment and approved leave. Self-employed applicants should provide business registration and financial records, while students should provide proof of current enrolment.
Applicants who qualify under CAN+ may not need to provide financial or employment evidence when they submit proof of qualifying previous travel to Canada or a valid United States non-immigrant visa.
Business and Accompanied Workers
Business visitors and conference attendees should provide:
- a letter from their employer explaining the purpose and expected duration of the trip, identifying the Canadian organization involved and confirming who will pay the expenses; and
- a letter from the Canadian business, organization or event host confirming the planned activities, dates and relationship with the applicant.
Domestic helpers or other workers travelling with their employer should provide:
- a signed employment contract;
- a letter from the employer confirming the purpose and duration of the trip;
- details of the worker’s duties while travelling;
- evidence of the worker’s current employment and salary; and
- proof that the employer will cover the applicable travel and living expenses.
Students, Returning Workers and Transit
Applicants planning to study in Canada for six months or less should provide a letter of acceptance from the Canadian educational institution. The letter should identify the program, tuition fees, study dates and registration deadline.
Applicants returning to Canada to continue their studies should provide:
- a copy of their valid Canadian study permit;
- recent academic transcripts; and
- a letter from their educational institution confirming current or future enrolment and the date they are expected to resume their studies.
Applicants returning to Canada to continue working should provide:
- a copy of their valid Canadian work permit;
- a recent letter from their Canadian employer confirming that they are expected to return and resume employment; and
- recent pay slips, bank records showing salary deposits or other evidence of Canadian employment income.
Applicants transiting through Canada should provide:
- a complete travel itinerary showing their entry to and departure from Canada;
- proof of onward travel;
- evidence explaining the purpose of their trip; and
- a valid visa or other proof that they are authorized to enter their destination country, where required.
Applicants travelling on diplomatic or official passports should provide the supporting official communication required for their trip.
