Liberia to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants applying for spousal sponsorship from Liberia must follow the country-specific IRCC instructions alongside the standard sponsorship application checklist. These instructions identify the additional local forms and supporting documents that may be required for an application involving Liberian nationals.
For Liberia applicants, the country-specific requirements include additional IMM forms, military service records where applicable, and special supporting documents when a child’s birth certificate was not issued at the time of birth.
Required Forms
Applicants from Liberia must complete the following country-specific forms where applicable:
- Supplementary Information – Your Travels [IMM 5562]
- Required for the principal applicant.
- Required for all family members included in the application who are 18 years old or older.
- Details of Military Service [IMM 5546]
- Required for anyone included in the application who has ever:
- held a high-ranking or senior official government position, or
- served in the military, army, defence, or police unit, including National Service.
- Required for anyone included in the application who has ever:
If IMM 5546 applies, submit a copy of all pages of the person’s military card or booklet, including blank pages.
Children's Documents
If a child’s birth certificate issued by Liberia was not issued at the time of birth, submit copies of:
- the supplementary judgment
- another official document naming the parents
- school documents listing the parents, if available
- the household registry
If school documents listing the parents cannot be obtained, provide an explanation.
Liberia to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Liberia must follow the Accra visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Accra Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5815, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Liberia applicants, IMM 5815 focuses on application timing, the study plan, current and previous study records, and financial evidence for at least one year of study in Canada.
Required Forms
Liberia study permit applicants must follow the Accra Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.
Country-specific checklist:
IMM 5815 is used alongside the standard study permit checklist. It does not replace the general study permit requirements.
Intake Timing
Liberia study permit applicants should plan to submit their applications according to the recommended timelines for the main Canadian academic intakes:
- in May or June for programs beginning in September; and
- in September or October for programs beginning in January.
These timelines are provided as guidance by the Accra visa office. They do not guarantee that a decision will be made before classes begin, but they can help applicants submit their applications early enough for the intended intake.
Study Plan
Liberia study permit applicants must provide a one-page study plan explaining why they want to study in Canada and how the proposed program fits their educational background and future plans.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada in the program to which they have been accepted;
- the applicant’s overall educational goal;
- why they are not pursuing a similar program in their country of residence;
- what research they have conducted into available study options in their country of residence or citizenship;
- how the proposed program may improve their employment opportunities in their country of residence or citizenship; and
- the ties they have to their country of residence or citizenship.
Applicants who have been out of full-time education for more than two years should also provide a CV or resumé.
Student Records
Liberia study permit applicants should provide documents confirming their current and recent education.
Applicants should include:
- a current letter from the educational institution they are attending;
- a current transcript from that institution; and
- transcripts from the previous school year.
These documents help establish the applicant’s recent academic history and support the study plan included with the application.
Financial Evidence
Liberia study permit applicants should provide evidence that they have sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for at least one year in Canada.
Applicants should include:
- copies of bank statements or a bank book covering the previous four months;
- documents showing that the funds come from a reliable source, such as a financial undertaking from a parent or sponsor, a scholarship or financial award, investments, rental income or similar evidence; and
- proof of payment if tuition fees have already been paid.
When a third party is financing the applicant’s studies, the application should include:
- the sponsor’s supporting financial documents;
- a letter explaining why the sponsor is providing financial support; and
- proof of the relationship, if the sponsor is a relative.
If the third-party sponsor lives in Canada, the application should also include:
- proof of the sponsor’s legal status in Canada;
- proof of employment showing the sponsor’s salary and length of service;
- a bank statement; and
- the summary page of the sponsor’s most recent Canada Revenue Agency income tax statement.
Liberia to Canada Visitor Visa
IRCC does not provide a separate country-specific document checklist for Canadian visitor visa applicants from Liberia. Applicants should therefore follow the standard IRCC visitor visa requirements and submit the supporting documents requested through their online application.
IRCC recorded 365 visitor visas for Liberia in 2023, 180 in 2024, and 135 in 2025, followed by 105 from January to June 2026.
A Canadian visitor visa can allow eligible Liberian travellers to visit Canada temporarily for purposes such as tourism, visiting family or friends, or certain business activities. The supporting documents required will depend on the applicant’s individual circumstances, purpose of travel, financial situation, and plans for their temporary stay in Canada.
