Laos to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants from Laos do not have additional Laos-specific IRCC forms or special country-specific document requirements for spousal sponsorship. Applications should therefore follow the standard IRCC spousal sponsorship instructions and document checklist, with careful attention to complete identity and civil-status documents, required translations and clear evidence supporting the relationship.
Canada’s spousal sponsorship program allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner for permanent residence. IRCC assesses the sponsor’s eligibility, the genuineness of the relationship and the sponsored applicant’s admissibility before making a final decision.
IRCC permanent residence statistics show that 45 Laotian citizens were admitted to Canada as sponsored spouses or partners from 2023 through May 2026. This included 15 admissions in 2023, 10 in 2024, 15 in 2025 and 5 from January to May 2026.
Laos to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Laos must follow the Bangkok visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Bangkok Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5819, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Laos applicants, IMM 5819 focuses on financial support, the source of study funds, a one-page study plan, and proof of current or previous studies.
Required Forms
Laos study permit applicants must follow the Bangkok Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.
Country-specific checklist:
IMM 5819 is used alongside the standard study permit checklist. It does not replace the general study permit requirements.
Financial Support
Laos study permit applicants should provide detailed documents showing how their studies in Canada will be funded.
Applicants should include documents from their financial supporter, such as:
- bank books or bank statements in the financial supporter’s name;
- a written explanation from the financial supporter describing the source of the funds;
- supporting evidence of the source of funds, such as employment letters, business registration documents or tax records;
- a written declaration confirming the financial supporter’s intention to support the applicant throughout their studies; and
- proof of the applicant’s relationship to the financial supporter, such as a birth or marriage certificate.
The Bangkok checklist places particular importance on demonstrating the origin of the funds. Large deposits that are not supported by evidence showing where the money came from may not be accepted as reliable proof that the applicant can afford to study in Canada.
Applicants who have received a scholarship should provide the original supporting documents, including a letter from the funding organization confirming the full amount they will receive during each year of the proposed study program.
Study Plan
Laos study permit applicants should include a study plan written in their own words and limited to one page.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada at the educational institution and in the program to which they have been accepted;
- the applicant’s overall educational goal; and
- how the Canadian diploma or degree may improve their future employment opportunities.
The study plan should be specific to the applicant’s academic background and career path. It should explain why the proposed Canadian program is a logical choice for the applicant rather than relying on a general statement about studying in Canada.
Student Records
Laos study permit applicants should provide documents confirming their current or previous education.
Applicants should include:
- a copy of their most recently obtained school diploma or certificate, including high school or university documents; and
- transcripts showing their academic results.
Applicants who are still studying and have not yet completed their current program should provide:
- their most recent transcript of marks; and
- a letter from the educational institution confirming when they are expected to complete the program.
These documents help establish the applicant’s education history and support the study plan included with the application.
Laos to Canada Visitor Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada visitor visa from Laos may need to follow the Bangkok Visa Office Instructions, IMM 5858, alongside the standard temporary resident visa requirements. These visa-office instructions may apply to more than one country; IRCC does not publish a separate Laos-only checklist.
For Laos applicants, documents not in English or French require certified translations, and applicants living outside their country of citizenship must provide a work permit or temporary stay permit. The checklist outlines CAN+ eligibility, financial evidence, work and study documents, business-travel evidence, and additional documents for family visits and minors.
Visa Office
IRCC does not publish a separate Laos-only visitor visa checklist.
For visitor visa applications from Laos, the official visa-office document that may be used through the IRCC visitor visa flow is the Bangkok Visa Office Instructions, IMM 5858 E (03-2019).
These instructions are tied to the Bangkok visa office, so they may cover more than one country and are not Laos-only instructions.
Document Rules
The Bangkok checklist says that documents not in English or French must include a certified translation.
For applicants who do not live in their country of citizenship, the checklist asks for a work permit or temporary stay permit.
Financial Documents
The Bangkok checklist includes a CAN+ note.
If the applicant has travelled to Canada in the last 10 years or currently holds a valid United States nonimmigrant visa and can provide proof, the checklist says proof of financial support is not needed.
For other applicants, the checklist lists financial support documents such as:
- employment letter
- pay slips
- proof of pension
- business registration
- investments
If another person is paying for the trip, the checklist asks for documents from the person paying, including official photo identification and a bank certificate showing sufficient funds.
Work Documents
The Bangkok checklist includes occupation and study-related document items.
For employed applicants, the checklist lists an employer letter showing:
- firm’s address and phone number
- job title
- date hired
- salary
- supervisor’s name
- authorized leave period
For business travel, the employer letter should also outline the purpose of the trip and include the names and addresses of the companies the applicant will visit.
For self-employed applicants, the checklist lists evidence of business, such as:
- business registration
- licence
- financial documents
For applicants who own a company or business, the checklist asks for original documents, including:
- commercial registration
- tax certificate
- corporate bank statement for at least the last six months
- evidence of ongoing business activity
For applicants who are currently studying, the checklist lists proof of current studies from an academic institution.
Specific Situations
The Bangkok checklist includes some situation-specific document items.
For applicants visiting a friend or relative, the checklist lists an invitation letter.
For minors travelling alone or with only one parent, the checklist lists:
- custody documents, if applicable
- authorization letter from the non-accompanying parent, if applicable
- authorization letter signed by both parents or legal guardians, if applicable
- official document showing the parent’s or parents’ signature, such as a passport
- copy of the death certificate, if the other parent is deceased
