Ethiopia to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants applying for spousal sponsorship from Ethiopia must follow the country-specific IRCC instructions alongside the standard sponsorship application checklist. These instructions identify the additional local forms and supporting documents that may be required for an application involving Ethiopian nationals.
For Ethiopia applicants, the country-specific requirements include additional IMM forms, military service records where applicable, and extra identity photo requirements for applicants living in Ethiopia.
Required Forms
Applicants from Ethiopia must complete the following country-specific forms where applicable:
- Supplementary Information – Your Travels [IMM 5562]
- Required for the principal applicant.
- Required for all family members included in the application who are 18 years old or older.
- Details of Military Service [IMM 5546]
- Required for anyone included in the application who has ever:
- held a high-ranking or senior official government position, or
- served in the military, army, defence, or police unit, including National Service.
- Required for anyone included in the application who has ever:
If IMM 5546 applies, submit a copy of all pages of the person’s military card or booklet, including blank pages.
Identity Documents
If the applicant lives in Ethiopia, they must submit 3 additional identity photos for:
- the principal applicant
- all family members included in the application
This means a total of 5 photos per person.
Ethiopia to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Ethiopia must follow the Nairobi visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Nairobi Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5839, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Ethiopia applicants, IMM 5839 focuses on the study plan, financial evidence, bank statement verification, sponsor documents, and proof of current or previous post-secondary studies.
Required Forms
Ethiopia study permit applicants must follow the Nairobi Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.
Country-specific checklist:
IMM 5839 is used alongside the standard study permit checklist. It does not replace the general study permit requirements.
Study Plan
Ethiopia study permit applicants should provide a study plan explaining the purpose of their proposed studies in Canada and how the program fits their educational background and future plans.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada in the program to which they have been accepted;
- the applicant’s overall educational goal;
- why they are not pursuing a similar program in their country of residence;
- what research they have conducted into available study options in their country of residence or citizenship;
- how the proposed program may improve their employment opportunities in their country of residence or citizenship; and
- the ties they have to their country of residence or citizenship.
Applicants who have been out of full-time education for more than two years should also provide a CV or resumé.
Financial Evidence
Ethiopia study permit applicants should provide detailed documents showing how their studies in Canada will be funded.
Applicants should include:
- bank statements covering the previous four months;
- a signed bank verification consent form;
- documents explaining the source of any lump-sum deposits;
- additional evidence showing that the funds come from a reliable source; and
- a letter of undertaking and supporting financial documents from a parent or sponsor, where applicable.
When a third party is financing the applicant’s studies, the application should include:
- the sponsor’s supporting financial documents, such as bank statements and employment records;
- documents showing the source of the sponsor’s funds;
- a letter containing the sponsor’s current contact information and explaining why they are providing financial support;
- details of whether the sponsor has previously supported the applicant financially; and
- proof of the relationship, if the sponsor is a relative.
If the third-party sponsor lives in Canada, the application should also include proof of the sponsor’s legal status in Canada and the summary page of the sponsor’s most recent Canada Revenue Agency income tax statement.
Student Records
Ethiopia study permit applicants should provide documents confirming their current or previous post-secondary education.
Applicants should include:
- copies of transcripts from every post-secondary educational institution they have attended; and
- copies of any certificates, diplomas or degrees issued by those institutions.
These documents help establish the applicant’s academic history and support the study plan included with the application.
Ethiopia to Canada Super Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada Super Visa from Ethiopia must follow the Nairobi visa office instructions in addition to the standard Super Visa checklist. These instructions are listed in the Nairobi Visa Office Instructions — IMM 5880.
For Ethiopia applicants, IMM 5880 includes Super Visa-specific instructions on private medical insurance, a written invitation promising financial support, proof of the inviter’s status in Canada, and Canadian-source evidence of the inviter’s ability to provide financial support.
Medical Insurance
Applicants from Ethiopia are assigned to the Nairobi visa office instructions:
- IMM 5880 – Nairobi Visa Office Instructions for Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan
For a Parents and Grandparents Super Visa, IMM 5880 requires proof of private medical insurance.
The insurance must be valid for a minimum of 1 year from a Canadian insurance company and must:
- cover health care, hospitalization, and repatriation
- provide minimum coverage of $100,000
- be valid for each entry to Canada
- be available for review by a port of entry officer
Invitation Letter
Applicants must provide a written and signed invitation letter from their inviter in Canada.
The invitation letter must promise financial support for the duration of the applicant’s visit.
Inviter Status
Applicants must include a copy of the inviter’s citizenship or immigration status document.
If the inviter is a permanent resident, IMM 5880 specifies that both sides of the Permanent Resident Card should be copied.
Financial Support
Applicants must provide proof that the inviter can provide the promised financial support.
IMM 5880 requires independent, third-party documentation from a Canadian source that is reliable or easily verifiable.
Examples include:
- Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment
- employment letters showing salary
- pay stubs
- bank statements
- Statements of Remuneration Paid
- financial statements prepared by a licensed professional
Ethiopia to Canada Visitor Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada visitor visa from Ethiopia must follow the Nairobi Visa Office Instructions, IMM 5880, alongside the standard temporary resident visa requirements. These are visa-office instructions rather than an Ethiopia-only checklist.
For Ethiopia applicants, the checklist may require document-verification consent, certified translations, and photocopies of supporting documents. It outlines CAN+ eligibility, financial evidence for self-funded or sponsored travel, and additional documents for business trips, official visits, students, family members, and children travelling without both parents.
Visa Office
IRCC does not publish a separate Ethiopia-only visitor visa checklist.
Eritrea is covered under the Nairobi Visa Office Instructions, which apply to:
- Djibouti
- Eritrea
- Ethiopia
- Kenya
- Somalia
- South Sudan
These are regional visa-office instructions, not Ethiopia-only instructions.
Document Rules
According to the Nairobi checklist, applicants may need the Consent to verification of documents form.
Documents that are not in English or French need a certified translation.
Applicants are asked to submit photocopies for the listed supporting documents.
Financial Documents
The Nairobi checklist includes a CAN+ option for some applicants.
If the applicant has travelled to Canada in the last 10 years or currently holds a valid United States nonimmigrant visa and can provide proof, proof of financial support may not be needed.
The Nairobi checklist gives specific financial-document examples.
For applicants paying for their own trip, the checklist lists:
- bank statements or bank book for the past three months
- employment letter
- pay slips
- proof of pension
- business registration
- proof of investments
If another person is paying for the trip, the checklist asks for:
- signed letter from the person paying
- copy of that person’s passport or other official photo identification
- bank certificate showing sufficient funds
- explanation of the relationship
- documents dated within three months of the application date
Specific Situations
The Nairobi checklist includes some situation-specific document items.
For business travel, the checklist lists:
- business registration
- financial documents
- official invitation from Canadian business contacts
- Canadian contact details
- purpose and length of trip
- funding arrangements
For a conference, training, or official visit, the checklist lists:
- mission order or verbal note
- employer letter stamped, signed, and dated within the current month
- official invitation from Canadian contacts
- conference registration proof
- proof of financial support for travel, transportation, and expenses in Canada
For children travelling alone or with only one parent, the checklist lists:
- consent letter
- photo identification with signature for the non-accompanying parent or parents
- child’s birth certificate
