Dominican Republic to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants from the Dominican Republic do not have additional Dominican Republic-specific IRCC forms or special country-specific document requirements for spousal sponsorship. Applications should therefore follow the standard IRCC spousal sponsorship instructions and document checklist, with careful attention to complete identity and civil-status documents, required translations and clear evidence supporting the relationship.
Canada’s spousal sponsorship program allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner for permanent residence. IRCC assesses the sponsor’s eligibility, the genuineness of the relationship and the sponsored applicant’s admissibility before making a final decision.
IRCC permanent residence statistics show that 1,245 citizens of the Dominican Republic were admitted to Canada as sponsored spouses or partners from 2023 through May 2026. This included 340 admissions in 2023, 345 in 2024, 370 in 2025 and 190 from January to May 2026.
Dominican Republic to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from the Dominican Republic must follow the Mexico City visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Mexico City Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5837, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Dominican Republic applicants, IMM 5837 focuses on passport validity and blank pages, VAC consent where applicable, recent third-party financial support documents, and Schedule 1 where required.
Required Forms
Dominican Republic study permit applicants must follow the Mexico City Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.

Standard study permit forms are not listed here because they are not Dominican Republic-specific.
Passport Documents
Dominican Republic study permit applicants must provide passport documents as listed by the Mexico City visa office.
The passport or travel document must have:
- at least one completely blank page, other than the last page
- validity for at least six months
- validity covering the planned stay in Canada
If the applicant is a non-Mexican currently in Mexico, they must provide a copy of their Mexican migratory form, such as FM2, FM3, or a tourist visa.
Financial Documents
Dominican Republic study permit applicants must provide proof of funds covering tuition and living expenses for at least one year in Canada.
If a third party, including a parent, is providing the funds, the applicant must include:
- a signed letter from the person providing the funds
- a photocopy of that person’s passport or other official photo identification
- a bank certificate showing that the person has sufficient funds
The third-party support documents must be dated within three months of the date the application is submitted.
Dominican Republic to Canada Visitor Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada visitor visa from the Dominican Republic may need to follow the Mexico City visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Mexico City Visa Office Instructions — IMM 5878, which is used together with the standard temporary resident visa checklist.
For Dominican Republic applicants, IMM 5878 does not identify any separate country-specific documents, local authority records, forms, or submission requirements.
Visa Office Instructions
Dominican Republic visitor visa applicants may need to follow the Mexico City Visa Office Instructions in addition to the standard temporary resident visa requirements.

IMM 5878 provides additional document and application instructions for applicants from the Dominican Republic whose applications are processed through the Mexico City visa office.
Financial Evidence and Travel History
Dominican Republic visitor visa applicants should provide evidence that they can cover the expenses of their visit.
Applicants who do not qualify under the CAN+ provisions should include financial documents such as:
- bank statements covering the previous three months;
- employment letters and recent pay slips;
- pension statements;
- business registration or investment records; and
- other documents showing available financial resources.
If another person is paying for the trip, the application should also include:
- a signed letter confirming the financial support;
- a copy of the supporter’s passport or other official photo identification;
- evidence that the supporter has sufficient funds; and
- an explanation of the relationship between the applicant and the supporter.
Applicants should also include any cancelled or expired passports they hold as evidence of previous international travel.
Purpose-Specific Documents
Additional documents may be required depending on the purpose of the applicant’s visit to Canada.
Business visitors should provide a letter from their employer explaining the purpose of the trip and listing the names and addresses of the companies or contacts they plan to visit.
Applicants travelling to Canada for a period of study lasting less than six months should include an acceptance letter from the Canadian educational institution.
Applicants transiting through Canada by air for less than 48 hours should provide their travel itinerary and, where applicable, proof that they are authorized to enter their destination country. Travellers taking a cruise that stops at a Canadian port require a visitor visa rather than a transit visa, even when they do not plan to leave the ship.
Applicants visiting family or friends should provide an invitation letter that includes the inviter’s full name and date of birth.
Emergency Processing Requests
Dominican Republic visitor visa applicants submitting a temporary resident visa application through the Canadian Embassy in Mexico City may use the Emergency Processing Request Form included in IMM 5878 when urgent processing is needed.
The form requires the applicant’s identity and passport details, intended departure date, information about accompanying travellers, the reason for the emergency request, contact information, signature and date.
The completed form should be placed on top of the temporary resident visa application. Submitting the form does not guarantee expedited processing.
