Cambodia to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants from Cambodia do not have additional Cambodia-specific IRCC forms or special country-specific document requirements for spousal sponsorship. Applications should therefore follow the standard IRCC spousal sponsorship instructions and document checklist, with careful attention to complete identity and civil-status documents, required translations and clear evidence supporting the relationship.
Canada’s spousal sponsorship program allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner for permanent residence. IRCC assesses the sponsor’s eligibility, the genuineness of the relationship and the sponsored applicant’s admissibility before making a final decision.
IRCC permanent residence statistics show that 275 Cambodian citizens were admitted to Canada as sponsored spouses or partners from 2023 through May 2026. This included 105 admissions in 2023, 90 in 2024, 60 in 2025 and 20 from January to May 2026.
Cambodia to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Cambodia must follow the Bangkok visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Bangkok Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5819, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Cambodia applicants, IMM 5819 focuses on financial support and source-of-funds documents, supporter declarations, scholarship or funding records, a one-page study plan, student records, and police records where applicable.
Required Forms
Cambodia study permit applicants must follow the Bangkok Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.

Financial Documents
Cambodia study permit applicants must provide financial documents showing how their studies in Canada will be funded.
Required financial documents include:
- bank books or bank statements in the name of the financial supporter
- a written explanation from the financial supporter explaining the source of funds
- documents supporting the source of funds
Source-of-funds documents may include:
- employment reference letters showing length of employment, position, salary, and benefits
- business registration documents
- tax documents
Large deposits without evidence showing where the funds came from will not be treated as reliable proof of financial ability.
Funding Support
Applicants who are receiving financial support must provide documents showing the supporter’s commitment and relationship to the applicant.
Required documents include:
- a written declaration from the financial supporter confirming their intent to support the applicant during the applicant’s studies
- proof of relationship to the financial supporter, such as birth or marriage certificates
Documents showing other assets may also be included, such as:
- stock market accounts
- business transactions
- real estate transactions
These asset documents may support the application, but they should not replace the required financial documents.
If the applicant has received a scholarship, they must provide original documentation, including an original letter from the funding body confirming the full amount the applicant will receive for each year of the proposed study program.
Student Records
Applicants from Cambodia must provide evidence of their current or previous studies.
Required student records include:
- a copy of the most recently obtained school diploma or certificate, including high school or university documents
- transcripts showing the applicant’s marks
If the applicant is currently studying and has not yet completed the program, they must provide:
- the most recent transcript of marks
- a letter from the school confirming when the applicant will complete the program
Applicants must also include a study plan. The study plan must be written by the applicant, be no more than one page long, and explain why the applicant wants to study in Canada at the school and program where they were accepted.
The study plan should also explain:
- the applicant’s overall educational goal
- how the Canadian diploma or degree will improve the applicant’s employment chances
Police Records
Applicants must provide police records only if the applicant or an accompanying family member has a criminal conviction.
Required documents include:
- an original police certificate
- a personal explanation of the events that led to the conviction
This section applies only where there is a criminal conviction.
Cambodia to Canada Visitor Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada visitor visa from Cambodia must follow the Bangkok Visa Office Instructions, IMM 5858, alongside the standard temporary resident visa requirements. These are visa-office instructions rather than Cambodia-only instructions.
For Cambodia applicants, documents not in English or French require certified translations, and applicants living outside their country of citizenship must provide a work permit or temporary stay permit. The checklist outlines CAN+ eligibility, financial evidence, work and study documents, business-travel evidence, and additional documents for family visits and minors.
Visa Office
IRCC does not publish a separate Cambodia-only visitor visa checklist.
For visitor visa applications from Cambodia, the relevant visa-office document available through IRCC is the Bangkok Visa Office Instructions, IMM 5858 E (03-2019).

Document Rules
The Bangkok checklist says that documents not in English or French must include a certified translation.
For applicants who do not live in their country of citizenship, the checklist asks for a work permit or temporary stay permit.
Financial Documents
The Bangkok checklist includes a CAN+ note.
If the applicant has travelled to Canada in the last 10 years or currently holds a valid United States nonimmigrant visa and can provide proof, the checklist says proof of financial support is not needed.
For other applicants, the checklist lists financial support documents such as:
- employment letter
- pay slips
- proof of pension
- business registration
- investments
If another person is paying for the trip, the checklist asks for documents from the person paying, including official photo identification and a bank certificate showing sufficient funds.
Work Documents
The Bangkok checklist includes occupation and study-related document items.
For employed applicants, the checklist lists an employer letter showing:
- firm’s address and phone number
- job title
- date hired
- salary
- supervisor’s name
- authorized leave period
For business travel, the employer letter should also outline the purpose of the trip and include the names and addresses of the companies the applicant will visit.
For self-employed applicants, the checklist lists evidence of business, such as:
- business registration
- licence
- financial documents
For applicants who own a company or business, the checklist asks for original documents, including:
- commercial registration
- tax certificate
- corporate bank statement for at least the last six months
- evidence of ongoing business activity
For applicants who are currently studying, the checklist lists proof of current studies from an academic institution.
Specific Situations
The Bangkok checklist includes some situation-specific document items.
For applicants visiting a friend or relative, the checklist lists an invitation letter.
For minors travelling alone or with only one parent, the checklist lists:
- custody documents, if applicable
- authorization letter from the non-accompanying parent, if applicable
- authorization letter signed by both parents or legal guardians, if applicable
- official document showing the parent’s or parents’ signature, such as a passport
- copy of the death certificate, if the other parent is deceased
