Brunei to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants from Brunei do not have additional Brunei-specific IRCC forms or special country-specific document requirements for spousal sponsorship. Applications should therefore follow the standard IRCC spousal sponsorship instructions and document checklist, with careful attention to complete identity and civil-status documents, required translations and clear evidence supporting the relationship.
Canada’s spousal sponsorship program allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner for permanent residence. IRCC assesses the sponsor’s eligibility, the genuineness of the relationship and the sponsored applicant’s admissibility before making a final decision.
According to the IRCC permanent residence statistics in your file, no Bruneian citizens were recorded as admitted to Canada under the Sponsored Spouse or Partner category in 2023, 2024, 2025 or from January to May 2026.
Brunei to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Brunei must follow the Singapore visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Singapore Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5850, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Brunei applicants, IMM 5850 focuses on academic documents, a one-page study plan, police certificates, proof of accumulated funds and their source, parents’ or sponsors’ financial information, employment documents where applicable, funding or scholarship evidence, and recommended IELTS Academic results.
Required Forms
Brunei study permit applicants must follow the Singapore Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.
Country-specific checklist:
IMM 5850 is used alongside the standard study permit checklist. It sets out the additional documents expected from applicants whose applications are handled under the Singapore visa office instructions.
Academic and Residence Documents
Brunei applicants must provide academic documents supporting their current or previous studies.
Applicants should provide:
- a notarized copy of any university or college diploma they have received
- transcripts for completed programs
- if they have not yet graduated, the expected graduation date and whether they will receive a degree, diploma, or certificate
If the applicant does not currently live in their country of citizenship, they must also provide proof of their immigration status in the country where they reside.
This may include a:
- permanent residence document
- temporary stay permit
- work permit
- study permit
The document should show its issue and expiry dates.
Minor applicants must also provide a copy of their birth certificate.
Study Plan
Brunei applicants must provide a one-page study plan.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada in the program where they were accepted
- the applicant’s overall educational goal
- why the applicant is not pursuing a similar program in the country of residence or citizenship
- how the program will improve employment opportunities in the country of residence or citizenship
- what ties the applicant has to the country of residence or citizenship
If the applicant has been out of full-time education for more than two years, they should also provide a CV.
For a minor applicant, the study plan should explain why they want to study in Canada and provide information about the immigration status of their parents or guardians in their current country of residence.
Police Certificates
Brunei applicants must provide original police certificates as required by IMM 5850.
Applicants must obtain a police certificate from each country or territory where they have lived for six consecutive months or longer since reaching the age of 18.
Applicants who require a certificate of no criminal conviction from authorities in Singapore will receive further instructions.
Financial Documents
Brunei study permit applicants must provide evidence of accumulated funds showing a financial history of at least four months.
Applicants should provide:
- a bank book or bank statement showing the account balance and financial history for at least the previous four months
- a written explanation showing the source of the funds
- supporting documents for other assets where applicable, such as investments, bonds, real estate, rental income, pensions, or business transactions
Other assets may support the application but should not replace the required bank documents. If clear supporting documents for the source of funds are unavailable, the applicant may provide a written explanation.
Applicants must also provide evidence of their parents’ financial situation. This may include:
- current employment letters for each parent showing the employer’s contact information, date of hire, position, salary, bonuses, and additional income
- income tax documents for the previous two years
If a parent owns all or part of a business, applicants should provide:
- a notarized copy of the business registration or licence showing the parent’s ownership
- business tax assessments for the previous two years
- audited financial statements and capital verification documents for the most recent fiscal year
If someone other than the applicant’s parents is providing financial support, the same financial information should be provided for that person, together with an explanation of why they are providing the support and proof of the relationship where applicable.
Applicants who are employed must provide employment documents and income tax information.
If funding is being provided by a Canadian school or another organization, an original letter should show the amount of funding available for each year of study.
IMM 5850 also highly recommends submitting IELTS Academic results taken within the previous year as evidence of language proficiency.
Brunei to Canada Visitor Visa
Citizens of Brunei are generally visa-exempt and must obtain an electronic travel authorization (eTA) when travelling to Canada by air with a valid Bruneian passport. An eTA is not required when entering Canada by land or sea, although travellers must still meet Canada’s entry requirements.
Where a visitor visa is required based on the applicant’s nationality, passport, or travel-document circumstances, applications from Brunei are handled by the Singapore visa office. The applicable local visitor visa instructions are listed in Temporary Resident Visa — Singapore Visa Office Instructions — IMM 5890, which provides the additional document requirements for visitor visa applications processed through that office.
