Botswana to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants from Botswana do not have additional Botswana-specific IRCC forms or special country-specific document requirements for spousal sponsorship. Applications should therefore follow the standard IRCC spousal sponsorship instructions and document checklist, with careful attention to complete identity and civil-status documents, required translations and clear evidence supporting the relationship.
Canada’s spousal sponsorship program allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner for permanent residence. IRCC assesses the sponsor’s eligibility, the genuineness of the relationship and the sponsored applicant’s admissibility before making a final decision.
IRCC permanent residence statistics show that 20 citizens of Botswana were admitted to Canada as sponsored spouses or partners from 2023 through May 2026. This included 5 admissions in 2023, 10 in 2024 and 5 in 2025, with no admissions recorded from January to May 2026.
Botswana to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Botswana must follow the Pretoria visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Pretoria Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5845, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Botswana applicants, IMM 5845 focuses on passport and legal status documents, a one-page study plan, student records, proof and sources of funds, third-party sponsorship details, and scholarship or tuition-payment evidence where applicable.

Passport Documents
Botswana study permit applicants must provide passport documents as listed by the Pretoria visa office.
Required passport documents include:
- a valid passport for each person requiring a temporary resident visa
- a photocopy of the bio-data page of the applicant’s passport
- a photocopy of the bio-data page for each accompanying dependant, if applicable
The passport should be valid for at least six months from the date of travel to Canada.
Applicants will be asked to submit original passports once all requirements have been met.
Legal Status
Applicants must provide proof of residence, immigration, or visa status if they are residents but not citizens of their country of residence.
This requirement applies when the applicant is living in a country where they are not a citizen.
The document should show the applicant’s legal status in the country where they are residing.
Student Records
Applicants from Botswana must provide documents showing their current and previous studies.
Required student records may include:
- transcripts from the educational institution the applicant is attending
- copies of high school certificates or diplomas
- records from any post-secondary studies
Applicants must also provide a one-page study plan.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada in the accepted program
- the applicant’s overall educational goal
- why the applicant is not pursuing a similar program in the country of residence
- what research the applicant has done into studies in the country of residence or citizenship
- how the program will improve employment opportunities in the country of residence or citizenship
- what ties the applicant has to the country of residence or citizenship
If the applicant has been out of full-time education for more than two years, they must provide a curriculum vitae or resumé.
Financial Documents
Botswana study permit applicants must provide proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for at least one year in Canada.
Required financial documents include:
- supporting documents showing a reliable source of available funds that can be converted to Canadian dollars
- a letter of undertaking and bank statements from a parent or sponsor covering the past three to six months
- official scholarship or financial award letters, if applicable
- investment documents, if applicable
Deed documents and property or vehicle ownership documents are not accepted as proof of funds.
If the applicant has received a scholarship or already paid tuition, they must provide a receipt from the educational institution in Canada confirming the payment or funding.
If a third person is sponsoring the studies, that person must provide supporting documents such as:
- bank statements
- employment records
- a letter with current contact information explaining why they will finance the studies
- proof of relationship to the applicant, if the sponsor is a relative
If the third-party sponsor is in Canada, the sponsor’s letter must include their name, address, telephone number, and email address.
The sponsor must also provide:
- proof of legal residence in Canada
- proof of employment, including years of service and salary
- a bank statement
- a copy of the summary page of the most recent Canada Revenue Agency notice of assessment
Botswana to Canada Visitor Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada visitor visa from Botswana may need to follow the Pretoria visa office instructions in addition to the standard temporary resident visa checklist. These instructions are listed in the Pretoria Visa Office Instructions — IMM 5971.
For Botswana applicants, IMM 5971 includes a Consent to Verification of Documents form.
Visa Office Instructions
Botswana visitor visa applicants may need to follow the Pretoria Visa Office Instructions in addition to the standard temporary resident visa requirements.
Relevant visa office instructions:
IMM 5971 includes additional instructions concerning document verification consent, financial and occupational evidence, business travel, conferences, training and official visits.
Applicants must also complete and submit the Consent to Verification of Documents form included in the Pretoria visa office instructions.
Financial and Occupational Evidence
Applicants who do not qualify under CAN+ should provide evidence that they have sufficient funds to cover the expenses of their visit.
Relevant supporting documents may include:
- an employment letter;
- pay slips covering the previous three months;
- proof of pension income;
- business registration documents; and
- evidence of investments or other available funds.
If another person is paying for the trip, the application should include information identifying that person and documents showing that they have sufficient funds.
Employed applicants should provide a letter from their employer confirming:
- their employment status and length of service;
- their position, salary and allowances;
- approval of leave for the planned stay in Canada; and
- the date they are expected to return to work.
For business travel, the employer letter should also explain the purpose of the trip and identify the companies the applicant will visit.
Self-employed applicants should provide evidence of their business, such as registration, licensing and financial documents.
Applicants who qualify under CAN+ do not need to provide proof of financial support when they submit evidence of qualifying travel to Canada within the previous 10 years or a valid United States non-immigrant visa.
Business, Conference and Official Visits
Applicants travelling to Canada for business should provide:
- business registration documents;
- financial documents, such as income tax statements, accounting records, year-end financial reports or bank statements; and
- an official invitation from their Canadian business contacts.
The invitation should include the names, addresses and contact information of the Canadian contacts, the purpose and duration of the trip, and the funding arrangements.
Applicants travelling for a conference, training or official visit should provide:
- a mission order for government travel and a Verbal Note, where applicable;
- an employer letter that is stamped, signed and dated within the current month, confirming the detailed purpose of travel, length of stay and the applicant’s position;
- an official invitation from the Canadian contacts identifying the travellers and their positions;
- proof of conference registration, where applicable; and
- proof of financial support for travel, transportation and expenses during the stay in Canada.
