Bhutan to Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Applicants applying for spousal sponsorship from Bhutan must follow the country-specific IRCC instructions alongside the standard sponsorship application checklist. These instructions identify the additional forms and supporting documents that may be required for an application involving Bhutanese nationals.
For Bhutan applicants, the requirements include IMM 5562 for travel history, additional identity documents when a birth was registered late, and specific divorce documents where applicable.
Required Form
Applicants from Bhutan must complete the following country-specific form:
- Supplementary Information – Your Travels (IMM 5562)
- Required for the principal applicant.
- Required for all family members included in the application who are 18 years old or older.
Birth Certificate Documents
If a birth was registered late in Bhutan, applicants should include a copy of the baptism certificate and other documents that help establish identity, such as:
- old school records, including Fifth class, Middle standard, and Matriculation or secondary school certificates;
- the voter’s identity card.
Bhutan to Canada Study Permit
Applicants applying for a Canada study permit from Bhutan must follow the Bangkok visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Bangkok Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5819, which is used together with the standard Canada study permit checklist.
For Bhutan applicants, IMM 5819 focuses on financial support, the source of study funds, a one-page study plan, and proof of current or previous studies.
Required Forms
Bhutan study permit applicants must follow the Bangkok Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for study permits.

IMM 5819 is used alongside the standard study permit checklist. It does not replace the general study permit requirements. Instead, it explains the additional local documents expected from applicants using the Bangkok visa office instructions, especially financial support evidence, study-plan details, and school records.
Financial Support
IMM 5819 gives detailed instructions on how Bhutan applicants should document financial support for studies in Canada.
Applicants should provide documents from their financial supporter, including:
- bank books or bank statements in the financial supporter’s name;
- a written explanation from the financial supporter explaining the source of funds;
- documents supporting the source of funds, such as employment letters, business registration documents, or tax documents;
- a written declaration from the financial supporter confirming their intent to support the applicant during their studies;
- proof of relationship to the financial supporter, such as a birth or marriage certificate.
The Bangkok checklist places particular importance on the origin of funds. Large deposits without evidence showing where the money came from may not be accepted as reliable proof that the applicant can afford international studies.
If the applicant has a scholarship, they should provide the original supporting documents, including a letter from the funding body showing the full amount they will receive during each year of the proposed study.
Study Plan
IMM 5819 asks Bhutan applicants to include a study plan written by the applicant. The study plan should be no more than one page.
The study plan should explain:
- why the applicant wants to study in Canada at the school and in the program where they were accepted;
- the applicant’s overall educational goal;
- how the Canadian diploma or degree may improve the applicant’s employment chances.
The study plan should be specific to the applicant’s education and career path. It should explain why the Canadian program makes sense for the applicant rather than giving a general statement about studying in Canada.
Student Records
IMM 5819 asks Bhutan applicants to provide evidence of current or previous studies.
Applicants should include:
- a copy of the most recently obtained school diploma or certificate, including high school or university documents;
- transcripts showing marks.
If the applicant is currently studying and has not yet completed the program, they should include:
- the most recent transcript of marks;
- a letter from the school confirming when the applicant will complete the current program.
These documents help show the applicant’s education history and support the study plan submitted with the application.
Bhutan to Canada Visitor Visa
Applicants applying for a Canada visitor visa from Bhutan must follow the Bangkok visa office instructions for local document requirements. These instructions are listed in the Bangkok Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5858, which is used together with the standard Canada visitor visa requirements.
For Bhutan applicants, IMM 5858 focuses on previous passports, financial support from another person where applicable, the purpose and arrangements of the proposed visit, employment or business documents, proof of current studies where applicable, invitation letters, and documents for minors travelling alone or with one parent.
Required Forms
Bhutan visitor visa applicants must follow the Bangkok Visa Office Additional Document Checklist for temporary resident visas.
Country-specific checklist and locally listed forms include:
- Bangkok Visa Office Additional Document Checklist — IMM 5858
- Family Information Form — IMM 5707, fully completed, dated, and signed
- Schedule 1: Application for Temporary Residence — IMM 5257 SCH1, only if the applicant answered “yes” to any background information questions on the visitor visa application
Documents that are not in English or French must be accompanied by a certified translation.
Applicants should also provide all cancelled or expired passports, where applicable, as evidence of previous travel.
Trip and Financial Support
Bhutan applicants must explain the purpose of their proposed visit to Canada and provide supporting documents.
Relevant documents may include:
- details of the itinerary in Canada
- provisional airline or hotel bookings
- a letter of invitation from the person or business being visited
- conference registration documents
- a letter from the applicant’s employer, where applicable
If another person is paying for the trip, the applicant must provide:
- a signed letter from the person providing the financial support
- a photocopy of that person’s passport or other official photo identification
- a bank certificate showing that the person has sufficient funds
- an explanation and proof of the applicant’s relationship to that person
These financial-support documents must be dated within three months of the application date.
Applicants visiting a friend or relative must also provide a letter of invitation.
Employment and Business Documents
Employed Bhutan applicants should provide a letter from their employer authorizing their leave.
The employer letter should include:
- the company’s address and telephone number
- the applicant’s job title
- the date the applicant was hired
- the applicant’s salary
- the supervisor’s name
- the period of authorized leave
If the applicant is travelling for business, the employer letter should also explain the purpose of the trip and provide the names and addresses of the companies the applicant will visit.
Self-employed applicants should provide evidence of their business, such as business registration, licences, and financial documents.
Applicants who own a company or business must provide:
- commercial registration
- tax certificate
- corporate bank statements covering at least the previous six months
- evidence of ongoing business activity and the volume of business
Depending on the type of business, this may include import or export licences, shipment invoices, or customs-clearance documents.
Students and Minor Travellers
Applicants who are currently studying must provide an official document confirming their registration as a student at an academic institution.
For applicants under 18 who are travelling alone or with only one parent, the applicable documents may include:
- custody documents
- a letter of authorization from the non-accompanying parent
- a letter of authorization signed by both parents or legal guardians, depending on the circumstances
- an official document showing the signature of the relevant parent or parents, such as a passport
If the other parent is deceased, a copy of the death certificate must be provided.
