How long does it take to get a spouse open work permit (SOWP) in Canada?
Last updated: January, 2026
There is no fixed processing time for a spouse open work permit in Canada. Most applications are processed within approximately 3 to 8 months, depending on several key factors. Applicants can start with the Spousal Open Work Permit page for a general overview of how this permit applies to spouses of workers, students, and permanent residence applicants.
- Where the application is submitted
Outside Canada (outland applications): These are processed by the responsible visa office abroad and typically take 4 to 8 months, depending on the applicant’s country of residence and visa office workload. If approved, the applicant receives a work permit approval letter and, if required, a TRV or eTA, and the work permit is issued upon entry to Canada. Location-related eligibility is explained further in the FAQ “Can I apply for an open work permit for my spouse outside Canada?”.
Inside Canada (inland applications): Online applications submitted from within Canada usually take 3 to 6 months, provided the applicant has valid temporary status.
- Status of the principal applicant
A spouse may qualify for an open work permit if the principal applicant is:
- A temporary foreign worker in an eligible TEER 0–3 occupation,
- A full-time international student at a designated learning institution (DLI), or
- A permanent residence applicant under certain programs.
Spouses of PR applicants sometimes apply while sponsorship is in progress, but as explained on the Spousal Sponsorship Program page, work permit and sponsorship applications are processed separately and do not affect each other’s timelines.
- Completeness of the application
Missing or weak documentation—such as proof of relationship or the principal applicant’s valid status—is a common cause of delays. Many issues discussed in the FAQ “Why is a spouse’s open work permit refused in Canada?” stem from incomplete or poorly prepared files.
- Biometrics, medical, and background checks
If biometrics, a medical exam, or additional background screening are required, processing may take several weeks longer, depending on appointment availability and review needs.
- IRCC workload and timing
SOWP Processing times fluctuate due to application volume, staffing levels, and policy updates. Planning considerations are covered in the FAQ “When to apply for a spouse open work permit”.
