Does Canada offer a fiancé visa and how does it work?

Canada does not offer a traditional fiancé visa the way some other countries do. IRCC does not have a separate immigration category for engaged couples. Instead, Canada only recognizes three relationship categories for partner immigration: spouse, common-law partner, and conjugal partner. This means being engaged alone does not qualify someone for permanent residence.

Here’s what that means in practical terms:

If you’re engaged but not married yet

You cannot apply for permanent residence under a “fiancé visa Canada” because it does not exist. To be eligible for spousal sponsorship Canada, you must first meet one of IRCC’s recognized relationship categories:

• Spouse → You can get legally married abroad or in Canada and then apply for spouse sponsorship.
  
• Common-law partner → You must live together in a marriage-like relationship for at least 12 consecutive months.
  
• Conjugal partner → Only for couples who have a real relationship but cannot live together or marry due to serious barriers (legal, cultural, immigration, safety).
  

Most engaged couples simply marry first and apply as spouses, because it is the most straightforward option.

If you want your fiancé to come to Canada temporarily

Your partner may apply for a visitor visa (TRV) to visit Canada and possibly get married here, but this is not a fiancé visa. Approval depends on showing:

• Strong ties to their home country
  
• Enough financial support for the trip
  
• A clear plan to return home if applying outland
  

A visitor visa does not give immigration rights or lead to PR.
