Post-Graduation Work Permit

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a valuable immigration pathway that allows international students who have completed an eligible program of study at a Canadian designated learning institution (DLI) to remain in Canada and gain essential work experience. This open work permit supports the transition from student life to professional employment and is one of the most direct ways to enhance future immigration prospects.

Graduates can receive a PGWP valid for up to three years, depending on the length of their academic program. This permit allows them to work for any employer across Canada and does not require a job offer at the time of application. Importantly, the experience gained under the PGWP is considered eligible for immigration programs such as the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry.

To qualify for the PGWP, applicants must:

  • Have completed a full-time program of at least 8 months in duration.
  • Graduate from a recognized DLI in Canada.
  • Apply within 180 days of receiving confirmation of program completion.
  • Hold valid temporary resident status or restore their status if expired.

The PGWP is a one-time opportunity, so graduates should ensure their academic program and institution are eligible. Part-time studies, language courses, or unrecognized institutions may render the applicant ineligible.

While the PGWP does not require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), its open nature means that graduates can explore employment in any field and location. Many use this time to build Canadian work experience, network with potential employers, and strengthen their eligibility for permanent residency pathways.

Graduates should also be aware of key timelines and IRCC requirements when applying, including the need for biometrics, application fees, and supporting documents. IRCC processing times can vary, so applying early is strongly recommended.

The PGWP is one of several important Open Work Permit options available to foreign nationals, and it plays a crucial role in Canada’s strategy to retain global talent trained at Canadian institutions. It is also commonly used in conjunction with open work permits for spouses or partners of international students and future Express Entry applications.
