Child Sponsorship
Canadian citizens and permanent residents may sponsor their biological or adopted children for permanent residence under the Family Class immigration category. This program allows families to reunite in Canada by offering a clear pathway for children to live, study, and grow up alongside their sponsoring parents in a safe and supportive environment.
To qualify, the child being sponsored must meet the definition of a dependent child as outlined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Generally, this means the child is under the age of 22 and not married or in a common-law relationship. In certain cases, children over 22 may still qualify if they have a physical or mental condition that prevents them from being self-supporting and they have been financially dependent on their parents since before turning 22.
For biological children, the process is more straightforward when the child is born to a Canadian citizen abroad. Depending on the circumstances, they may already be eligible for Canadian Citizenship and require only proof of status rather than permanent residence.
In the case of adopted children, the process can involve additional steps. Prospective adoptive parents must complete the adoption legally in accordance with Canadian provincial or territorial laws and international adoption regulations, if applicable. The child must also undergo standard immigration procedures, including medical exams and background checks.
Whether you’re sponsoring a child from abroad or regularizing the status of a child already living in Canada, this stream emphasizes family unity and the importance of providing children with a stable future. Supporting documentation such as birth certificates, custody agreements, or adoption records will be required.
