Bridging Open Work Permit

The Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) allows eligible foreign nationals in Canada to continue working legally while awaiting a decision on their permanent residence application. It is intended for individuals whose current work permit is approaching expiry and who have submitted a complete application under an eligible economic immigration program, including those managed through Express Entry.

This permit offers flexibility by allowing holders to work for almost any employer in Canada, without needing a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). It supports applicants in maintaining employment during the transition period and is particularly relevant for those applying through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades Program, or other economic streams leading to permanent residency.

To be eligible for a BOWP, applicants must be currently living in Canada with valid temporary resident status, hold a work permit that is close to expiring, and have received an Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR) from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirming that their permanent residence application has passed the completeness check.

This work permit plays a critical role in minimizing disruption to the lives of skilled workers already contributing to Canada’s economy. It also provides continuity for employers who rely on these professionals. In many cases, spouses or common-law partners of BOWP holders may also qualify for an open work permit, helping to maintain family stability during the waiting period.

While the BOWP provides continued work authorization, applicants remain subject to all standard eligibility checks, including biometrics, medical exams, and criminal background clearances. They must also comply with temporary resident conditions throughout the application process and stay informed about updates to Express Entry regulations, NOC codes, and IRCC policy changes that could impact eligibility.

It is important to note that the BOWP is not an immigration program on its own but a transitional measure that complements Canada’s permanent residence system. It enables skilled applicants to remain employed and stable in Canada while their immigration status is finalized.
