Parents Visitor Visa

For families looking to spend time together in Canada, a Visitor Visa offers a flexible and straightforward option for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. While it doesn’t lead to permanent status, it enables short-term stays for family visits, special occasions, caregiving, or to maintain close relationships while exploring other immigration pathways.

The Visitor Visa allows eligible parents and grandparents to visit Canada for up to six months per entry. Those wishing to stay longer can apply for an extension while in Canada, provided they continue to meet immigration requirements.

Applicants must demonstrate they are genuine visitors who intend to leave Canada at the end of their stay. Key requirements include:

  • A valid passport,
  • Proof of ties to their home country (such as family, employment, or property),
  • Financial support (either personal or from a Canadian host),
  • A letter of invitation from their child or grandchild in Canada (recommended),
  • No medical or criminal inadmissibility concerns.

While the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program offers a route to permanent residency, it is subject to annual intake limits and randomized selection. For families not selected or not ready to commit to sponsorship, a Visitor Visa serves as a suitable alternative.

For longer visits, the Super Visa is a more appropriate solution. It permits stays of up to five years per visit and offers multiple entries over 10 years, though it requires meeting stricter income and insurance requirements.
