Travel Document (PRTD)
If you are a permanent resident of Canada currently outside the country and do not have a valid PR card, you may need a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return. The PRTD serves as temporary proof of your permanent resident status and allows you to re-enter Canada.
This travel document is essential for individuals who:
- Lost their PR card while abroad
- Had their PR card expire while outside Canada
- Do not yet qualify for PR card renewal or replacement
- Are unable to return to Canada through a land border
The Travel Document (PRTD) is issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) through a visa application center (VAC) or embassy in the country where the permanent resident is currently located. It is typically valid for a single entry, meaning once you use it to return to Canada, it cannot be reused.
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate they have maintained their permanent resident status. This generally involves showing you’ve met the residency obligation of spending at least 730 days (2 years) in Canada during the last 5 years. However, exceptions may apply for those traveling with a Canadian citizen spouse or employed abroad by a Canadian business or government organization.
Applying for a PRTD requires submitting forms, travel history, proof of status, and residency records. The process can be complex—especially when residency requirements are unclear—so working with a knowledgeable immigration consultant can make a significant difference in how your application is received.
