Programs for Caregivers

The Canadian Caregivers Program offers a meaningful pathway to permanent residency for individuals who provide essential care services to children, seniors, or individuals with medical needs. Caregivers play a vital role in supporting Canadian families and communities, and this program recognizes their contribution by offering immigration opportunities to those with experience and dedication in caregiving roles.

Currently, the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot are the two active federal immigration streams available for caregivers. Both pilots are five-year initiatives that allow qualified applicants and their families to apply for permanent residence after gaining Canadian work experience or through a direct pathway if they already possess eligible experience. These programs offer a clear and supportive route to settle in Canada, especially for those who have already demonstrated a commitment to caregiving as a career.

To be eligible, applicants must have:

  • A valid job offer in Canada in an eligible caregiving occupation;
  • Relevant work experience in home child care or home support roles (if applying with experience);
  • Language proficiency and educational credentials that meet program requirements;
  • Intent to reside outside the province of Quebec.

Applicants with less than 24 months of qualifying Canadian work experience must apply for an occupation-restricted open work permit and complete the required work experience before their permanent residence application can be finalized. Those who already have the required experience can apply directly for permanent residency.

The Caregivers Program represents Canada’s values of compassion, support for families, and respect for the work of those who dedicate their careers to caring for others. It provides a stable immigration pathway for individuals looking to make a lasting impact in Canadian households while offering long-term security for themselves and their families.
