Federal Skilled Trades
The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is a dedicated immigration stream under Canada’s Express Entry system, designed for experienced tradespersons working in high-demand occupations across the country. It offers a direct pathway to permanent residency for individuals with hands-on expertise in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, transportation, electrical work, maintenance, and agriculture—all of which are vital to Canada’s economy and infrastructure.
Unlike other Express Entry programs, the FSTP is tailored for applicants who may not have formal academic degrees but do have certified training and practical experience in skilled trades. To qualify, candidates must have at least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the last five years, meet the required language proficiency levels, and possess either a valid job offer from a Canadian employer or a certificate of qualification from a recognized provincial, territorial, or federal authority in Canada.
Candidates are ranked in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) based on age, work experience, education, language skills, and adaptability. Those who meet the criteria are placed into the Express Entry pool and may be selected in program-specific draws conducted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Once invited, applicants must submit a complete application for permanent residence, including supporting documents such as medical exams, police certificates, and biometrics.
The FSTP plays a crucial role in helping Canada address skilled labour shortages, especially in provinces facing growth in infrastructure and industrial development. High-demand trades like welding, plumbing, carpentry, machining, and heavy equipment operation remain key targets under this stream.
As part of the broader Express Entry framework, the FSTP operates alongside the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class. Many provinces also offer Express Entry-aligned PNP streams, such as Ontario’s Skilled Trades Stream, Human Capital Priorities, and French-Speaking Skilled Worker Stream, which may enhance an applicant’s chance of selection.
Staying informed about NOC and TEER classification updates, changing eligibility criteria, and policy shifts is essential for anyone pursuing this route.
