PR Card Renewal
The Permanent Resident (PR) card is official proof of a person’s status as a Canadian permanent resident and is essential for re-entering Canada after international travel. If your PR card is expired or will soon expire, and you plan to travel outside the country, it’s important to apply for PR card renewal to maintain uninterrupted mobility and documentation status.
To be eligible for renewal, you must still hold permanent resident status and have met the residency obligation—which requires you to be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within the last five years. Failing to meet this obligation may result in a loss of PR status, making timely renewal not only a practical matter but a legal one.
The PR card renewal process involves completing the IMM 5444 form, gathering supporting documents such as a valid passport, old PR card, and proof of residency (e.g., tax returns, leases, utility bills), and paying the required processing fee. You must also include two recent photographs that meet IRCC’s specifications.
While it’s possible to stay in Canada with an expired PR card (since your status remains valid), you cannot travel internationally or re-enter Canada via commercial transportation without a valid card or a permanent resident travel document (PRTD). If you’re planning travel and your card is expired or expiring soon, renew it well in advance to avoid complications.
If your PR card has been lost, stolen, or destroyed, you will need to submit an explanation and may be asked to provide a police report. You can learn more about that process under our Document Replacement page within the Status Extension section.
Processing times for PR card renewal can vary, so it’s wise to apply at least six months before the expiry date—especially if travel is anticipated.
